Highly Overrated But Still Good
The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

Goodfellas is one of those rare films you can watch again and again and still come away feeling you've watched true cinematic mastery at work. The films depiction of the mob is in no way glossy, there's no romantic aspirations of the life of a gangster, it simply puts it as it is. The violence, the cutthroat nature of the lives of these mobsters isn't watered down, if there ever was an anti gang film this may well be it. Ray liotta gives the performance of his career, a height he was never able to hit again and possibly should have earned him an Oscar. De Niro once again proves his craft as the sociopathic Jimmy, teaming up with director Martin Scorcese for a fifth time. Pesci undoubtedly steals the show as the blisteringly violent mobster Tommy De Vito. However the unsung performance of the film falls to Lorraine Bracco as the mob wife a role she play with great energy and brilliant depth, surely Oscar worthy. If you're looking for the definitive Scorcese film, this may be his best.
I saw a lot of mafia movies and they all are on the same mold. This one is no exception and to me, frankly, it was quite boring. Of course, it is possible that other films under this template are younger than "Goodfellas" and that, if I saw them chronologically, this one would be more interesting, and the others that copy it would be boring. But "The Godfather" was made almost twenty years before this film, so this theory does not hold water either. However, seven nominations and one won Oscar, baton in the hands of Martin Scorsese and the cast which is by no means inferior to that of "The Godfather" rise this achievement above a bunch of similar ones. But as I rated "The Godfather" an eight out of ten, I can not rate this one above7/10
Great movie, really well paced, very fast,great acting, plenty of great lines and characters. I rated this film higher than I did Godfather 2, but that's because this film hits something purely subjective in me which elevates it to that higher level. I just enjoy it more, despite both films probably being among similar levels with Godfather 2 probably being better in a few different ways.
