How sad is this?
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Such a hyper stylised film might be a turn off for some but personally the breakneck pace of the film is amazing in telling such a detailed story and also keeping things light hearted in what's quite frankly a bleak existence for our protagonist 'Rocket'. An extremely enjoyable film the twist of sorts at the end is very pleasant
Two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer. Cidade De Deus (City of God) has a very stylish look as a film but i also enjoyed the camera frame work at the beginning and how it was spinning so damn fast. Unfortunately despite the excellent camera work and very good cinematography the film was extremely slow pacing and that kinda took me out of the whole thing since the acting was pretty good and the way that it depicts some events were brutally honest and 100% violent but as i said the pacing was very off and just made me yawn in certain moments. (5.5/10)
This movie is a real gem. It is about as near perfection as any movie can be. The story and writing are superb, with fantastic direction, and the acting is amazing. Really the entire cast is impeccable. I can't recommend this one highly enough. The only warning I have is that it obviously is not good for family/children viewing because of the violence and subject matter involved. But what a great story and movie this is! Riveting.
Simply, the best foreign movie in gangster category. How Lil' Dice became Lil'Z' portrayed the lifestyles of children, gangsters, drug dealers during 60s and 70s in the city of God and its anthology style will amaze you. You will enjoy to movie from a to z.If you are to watch foreign movies this vacation, put this on the bucket list.
