Excellent adaptation.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
Death, who takes the form of a young man, asks a media mogul to act as a guide to teach him about life on Earth, and in the process, he falls in love with his guide's daughter. Meet Joe Black is one of those rare moments in time where actor Brad Pitt truly showcases his acting abilities and their pretty damn good, Anthony Hopkins is also terrific as he always is (or at least most of the time). The film is indeed 3 hours long but you never really feel that is long since it's a pretty damn fast movie and it really showcases the dramatic and thriller aspect without having someone killing or just stupid jump scares, this is actually a film with nice style and very well written and it truly knows it. (A+)
Lets get the criticism out of the way first. Imagine your watching a film with your annoying kid brother and every time someone spoke your annoying kid brother paused the film and you had to wait a minute to find out what the other person said until play was pressed and the film resumed. Well Joe Black is a bit like this. It is 3 hours long and at least an hour is taken up with PAUSES. Secondly the character death who has been around since the big bang has been as observant of humankind as an ostrich with its head in the sand. You would think he knew everything....WRONG. His EUREKA moment is the discovery of peanut butter which goes to show that Death is really an American at heart. Did I mention the longful looks?...No....well imagine you had a annoying kid brother who pressed pause when your watching a film every time people looked at each other....you know where I am going.....For such a great cast and what could have been a much better story and for wasting most of the 3hrs on freeze frame cinema I will give a 4.....RIP Anthony Hopkins
The opening almost caused me to turn this movie off. So boring, long, draggy, oh dear, oh dear! You'd think that a film starring the great Anthony Hopkins and the popular Brad Pitt would be marvellous, but it is NOT. And the gal cast as Hopkins' "beautiful" daughter is dreadful, irritating and annoying. How could such a mis-casting take place in 1998? Were there no other candidates? SO MANY times during this picture, I found myself yelling "Get on with it!". So often it ground almost to a halt, seemed like a rehearsal with all parties hung over. Anthony Hopkins has certainly refined to a fine art, the skill of s-p-e-a-k-i-n-g s-l-o-w-l-y. Overall, this movie has some merit, but far, far less than it should have had. A major disappointment.
Fantasy, mystery, drama, romance and even comedy... They all were melted in the crucible in an excellent way. I felt all of them throughout the movie, I began to grieve while laughing, I thought about fantastic issues while getting carried away with romance, etc. The last time I saw a movie like this is a long time ago... It was The Bucket List (2007) and put a smile on my face. Meet Joe Black is well-formed with acting, editing, and dialogues. It does not bother you even though it lasts 3 hours nearly, someone might not realize how the time passes. I could wish more than it as for me.Another feeling I had towards the end of the movie is that it would be half black and half blue if the movie were a color.
