it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

...that's the whole description you need for this movie...no really there isn't much to talk about. "Shoot em' up" is a very simple but incredibly fun and cartoony action movie, that never tries to be something else. The one-liners are cheesy, the action is so over-the-top that i can 't compare it to something else i've seen, and the plot is so paper- thin that the movie just starts, without introducing anything, you press play and it just goes without stopping. The first shot of the movie is Clive Owen looking intensely into the camera and than munching on a huge carrot, while sitting on a bench seemingly without any reason, and then the plot just comes to him...quite literally. And the Elmer Fudd of our picture is played by Paul Giamatti, who is more psychotic as ever, it's amazing, and disgusting to watch. The action is the selling-point of the film and man does it never holds back. In one scene Clive Owen sleeps with Monica Belucci and shoots some bad guys, while doing it. In another scene he jumps out of a plane and has a skydiving-shootout with some bad guys...you won 't believe it until you see it... Only downside is the editing, which is at times a bit too fast and sometimes you don't really know where all the people are in the room, but because of the cartoony nature and the fun moments it's not too bad.The most interesting part is that it works, strangely enough, the weak characterization and the cartooniness of the film work in it's advantage, at the end it get's down right touching and intense, you really begin to care for what's going on, and enjoy the experience...at least i did.All in all "Shoot em' up" does all it set out to deliver, and even more, it's pure entertainment and incredibly fun...

Sorry, but I'm giving this a 2. The plot seems right out of the politically motivated mind of anti-2nd amendment hack, Michael Bloomberg. ...complete with all the clichés you'd expect from a foaming at the mouth leftist. The irony is despite the non-stop anti-gun rhetoric, it's a good guy with a gun that saves the day. If you have a strong stomach for political tripe, and if you liked Sin City's over the top comic book style you might be entertained.. I was not. The villains were unbelievable as were the heroes...I couldn't wait for it to be over.

WARNING: This movie is not for the faint of heart. Smith (Clive Owen), a war veteran and former shooting champion, protects a baby and a prostitute named (Monica Bellucci) from two squadrons of goons working for an arms manufacturer and a US Senator, who's running for President on a hard nosed gun control control platform. The baby boy, named Oliver by Smith, was conceived as part of an illegal cloning operation. Smith and Donna fall in love and form a paternal bond with Oliver. Smith learns that Oliver's birth was originally part of a plan to provide Sen. Rutlidge (Daniel Pilon), a Democratic Presidential candidate running on a strong gun control platform, with a bone marrow donor. Smith just came across at the right place and time in order to prevent Oliver from being killed with the other mothers and children in the clinic. Karl Hertz, the leader of the arms manufacturer's espionage crew, is trying to eliminate the baby so he can theoretically prevent the supposed (and far fetched) repeal of the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution-the right to bear arms. Operating on this premise, I suppose is the license for the ultra-violent gun fights, which are pretty fun, and the sickening fetish humor. I never considered how many gross jokes and script ideas could from the idea of inserting a gun into a strange place. The needless sexualization of the gun violence in this repugnant fashion may be the writer and director's idea of advocating on behalf of gun control advocates but it just doesn't work. The macho displays, stylized violence and sexual humor are just a bad combo by the end. This film wants be like Millar vehicles Wanted or Kick-Ass, which have done a better job of combining humor with ultra-violence. Even the cult action comedy, Crank-which mixes ultra-violence and strong sexual content, doesn't come across as so repugnant. I guess it's the mainly the sadism and the extreme risk posed to even a fictional child that keep me from actually liking this film.

Art. There are many forms of it (eg film, music, video games), and many like to display their art in many particular manners, whether it would be subtle or obvious and mainly good or bad. There are many people who are considered artists, and whether their individual art is good or bad is up to interpretation. Very rarely however do I feel that someone's artistic vision shouldn't be expressed at all. Sure, there are many bad films, songs, video games, literature and so on, but that isn't what I am talking about. Sure, they may be abysmal, but it's their artistic vision, and more often than not, there is at least some sort of appeal for it, as someone else may find something worth merit in that vision. No, the kind of art that I'm discussing is not only bad, but evil minded. Art that is not only lacking in redeeming feature, but also morality, as it has an evil viewpoints that will make you question what the artist behind the art was thinking, and how anybody could enjoy it. That is definitely the case here. Shoot 'Em Up at first may look like a light-hearted action movie and being a tribute to silly 80's action movies and Looney Tunes cartoons. What it actually is however, is an evil-minded film, full of poor characterization, action, constant sadism and questionable ideas. The plot is that a hit-man named Smith is trying to protect a baby, after witnessing it's mother get killed, from an evil hit-man. Along the way, he teams up with a prostitute who will mother the baby, and both will experience an adventure involving guns, carrots and corrupt politicians. While my description of the plot may make it sound like a fun popcorn feature enjoyed on a Friday night with friends, it isn't at all. The film isn't self-aware at all and it takes itself way too seriously, trying to make serious points about important issues like gun control and government cover-ups. It seriously doesn't work as these issues are in the background most of the time and when it is brought up, it is about as subtle as a punch to the stomach. Honestly, Michael Moore is watching this and saying that this isn't subtle enough. The film is mostly humorless throughout because of it, feels very tiresome. This means that many over-the-top moments that should be silly come of as sadistic and pervy, including a scene where the villain hit-man (Paul Giamatti - how much did they pay you to star in this?) feels up the dead mother and sniffs her breasts or where he burns the legs of the prostitute character with his gun. This may seem jokey and playful to the creators, but it is flat out gross here, and it makes you question the taste of those who enjoyed this. The action isn't very good either, as it lacks imagination. I understand that it pays tribute to 80's and John Woo action movies, but that doesn't defend the movie's lazy action. Many of these action scenes (eg Smith flying in the air, crashing into cars and jumping into the middle of a spiral staircase and killing the bad guys surrounding him) have been done countless times before and often better. It doesn't help that the action lacks any sort of tension. Sure, it is pretty obvious in many of Schwarzenegger's and Stallone's action movies who will win the fights, but at least the heroes and villains are fairly matched, as they play soldiers and usually fight cops or soldiers. Here though, it is unfairly matched, as Smith is a person who has been an expert at shooting from childhood and he is facing hit men who couldn't even hit the wrong side of the barn, even though they are working for a Senator. This is mainly highlighted in a scene where Smith manages to kill a van load of bad guys, despite only being armed with a pistol and having crashed through the front window of said van, and the bad guys are armed with machine guns. There are also many little things that will bug you. Many scenes are shot in the dark, many of the one-liners aren't funny due to the movie's straight face and there are mainly little plot holes as well (ie why doesn't Smith hand this baby in to an orphanage to look after it rather than bringing it along to increasingly dangerous shootouts). All of this also ruins the movie's very few good points. Some of the acting is good, (even if Paul Giamitti is John Trovolta Battlefield Earth levels of hammy) and I liked the idea of it being a live action Looney Tunes. However, all of Smith's gunplay with carrots still doesn't erase the memory of a dead woman being felt up a few scenes earlier. It may justify this movie's loose structure (being a series of bits like a series of short cartoons) but not much else. Overall, this is one of the worst action movies ever made and is one of the most evil films of all time. Sure, it has some good ideas, and some redeeming features, but this is a terrible movie that should be avoided at all costs. Don't watch this movie as it is an evil film, and if you have, shame on you. I don't mean to be rude but by watching this, you have encouraged these people to make more of this and reduce film from a credible art form to something truly hideous. That is how bad this film is. I rest my case.
