After watching OLDBOY and MEMORIES OF MURDER I understand that koreans dominating drama thriller crime movies. It was fantastic. For sure one of the best in history in its genre. With a great acting performances and very very strong story to keep you without blinking an eye for couple of hours in front of the screen.

I must be honest, some of the things the police did made me raise an eyebrow, wondering if this is indeed the way the Korean police conduct their investigations. The police are (once again) depicted as idiots more often than not. Interesting to see in how many Korean movies this is the case. The film starts off as a great mystery, then plummets to the eyebrow-scenes I mentioned above, and after the halfway mark it gets really interesting and suspenseful. I didn't find any actors incredibly good, but not entirely bad either - they just didn't seem all that serious considering the film's plot, and considering this was based on a true story. I thought the film had a lot of trivial scenes that could have been omitted, thereby cutting the lengthy running time. Based on the real-life unsolved murders, the film's ending does not provide any closure. It is nevertheless a good film, though, and if you're into Korean movies, I do recommend you see this.

Movie: Memories of Murder (15)Rating: 5/5MEMORIES OF MURDER is one of those many South Korean classics I've got to watch, but very late. I should've seen this quite earlier. After all, the film is a perfect masterpiece of its own genre. No doubt why and how it has attained the cult status. The film stays true to the genre, and that's why it can be called the best South Korean action-crime drama.Bong Joon-ho is known for experimental movies. And most of them have impressed the viewers. This film is no exception. Packed with powerful performances from Song Kang-ho and Kim Sang-kyung apart from a powerful script and an even powerful screenplay, the film has all the ingredients of an ideal entertainer. The film makes us feel a lot. Song Kang-ho lives the character he plays, and you can't separate his reel and real life characters. Kim Sang-kyung plays his natural best. He's got some terrific acting talent and displays it perfectly. Rest of the actors do a good job.The cinematography is excellent in many portions. The film is definitely worth watching in the highest quality available. The music is very melodious, and the one in the end will stay with you for long. Certain scenes have the excitement increased due to the powerful BGM. The action bits are decently done too.Undoubtedly, MEMORIES OF MURDER is the best and a masterpiece of its genre. You would've never seen a film like this. Song Kang-ho and Kim Sang-kyung won't let you just watch the film, they'll make you involved in the screenplay, and that's the biggest victory of the film.

1986. In a rural district of South Korea, two women have been recently raped and murdered. Working on the case are detectives Park Doo-man and Cho Yong-koo. Their efforts are impeded by some sloppy crime scene procedure by the police. Their methods of solving cases are also quite basic, essentially amounting to beating confessions out of suspects. All this leads to nothing and the police chief brings in a more sophisticated and intelligent detective from Seoul, Seo Tae-yoon. With his arrival the methods improve but they still don't have the killer. Then another woman is found murdered and a pattern emerges...Gripping drama from writer-director Joon-ho Bong. Intriguing from the start, and the intrigue ramps the more you get into it. Gritty, realistic and certainly doesn't glamorize detective work - so many red herrings and dead ends!Quite funny at times too. The methods of the local detectives are sometimes very farcical and the director makes the most of these moments of comedy.Very powerful and thought-provoking ending. As with the remainder of the plot, not at all predictable or formulaic.Solid performances, especially from the two leads, Kang-ho Song and Sang-kyung Kim.
