Construction company owner John Matthews learns that his estranged son, Jason, has been arrested for drug trafficking. Facing an unjust prison sentence for a first time offender courtesy of mandatory minimum sentence laws, Jason has nothing to offer for leniency in good conscience. Desperately, John convinces the DEA and the opportunistic DA Joanne Keeghan to let him go undercover to help make arrests big enough to free his son in return. With the unwitting help of an ex-con employee, John enters the narcotics underworld where every move could be his last in an operation that will demand all his resources, wits and courage to survive.

I'd never heard of this movie before, not sure how I missed it but I was initially excited because the story sounded interesting with a poster that promised lots of action and I like Dwayne Johnson, Barry Pepper and Shane (I mean Jon Bernthal). It ended up being a decent enough drama but not at all what I was expecting. The story itself is sort of plodding and slow and not fun in any way -also not action filled until the last bullet riddled car/big-rig chase scene. The Rock does give one of his more thoughtful performances though (reminding me of Faster) and its been based on an intriguing true story.Johnson plays an everyday guy here, a construction company owner and desperate father who goes undercover for the DEA to infiltrate a drug cartel in order to lessen his sons (mandatory) 10 year prison sentence after he gets wrongly accused of trafficking drugs in a set up drug deal.Jon Bernthal was super impressive as the ex-con employee 'John' convinces to be his "in" to the drug underworld. Barry Pepper also wowed in another character role and is almost unrecognizable as an undercover FBI narcotics officer. Michael K. Williams stays true to The Wire typecasting as Malik the drug dealer and Susan Sarandon was a surprise bit of casting as a hard-hitting DA.All in an okay movie, nothing outstanding or particularly memorable. 1/11/16

Dwaynne Johnson is doing a lot of good for the public in general in making this true story movie! he's a very good actor. years ago, me and my family got out of our car at Wendy's restaurant on poplar ave. here in Memphis. on the weekend. up pulled an old car filled with big men. they were wrestlers. they were all polite, kind, friendly. never, ever threw their weight around. i was very, very impressed! so was my whole family. we liked them. i was in line at the Germantown Kroger several years ago, and, the wrestler Jerry Lawler was ahead of me. he was a gentleman. kind. easy going. i learned a lot from this movie that i did not know about the drug laws. every teenager in America needs to see this movie. every parent of children in America needs to see this movie. lawman Buford Pusser was a wrestler before he became a sheriff in Mcnairy county Tennessee years ago. remember him? he had strength of character! i always liked Dwaynne Johnson as a wrestler back in the 1990's! "i've always enjoyed, admired, and stood in utter amazement with people in the entertainment industry. movie stars. singers. actors. actresses.

Story: Following one man as he risks everything to save his son, we see it isn't just his life, his son's life it also will risk his new wife's life and daughter as he goes undercover. We get to see how a rookie drug mule ends up tricking some of the biggest names in drug dealing. It fails to offer anything new to the genre it does offer an insight to a based on true events. Everything turns out to be very simple to watch that plays out smart without challenging the audience too much. The Rock has always been considered a charismatic individual with not great acting, however, this film shows that he has true acting ability that we have not really seen this before. This film starts with the Rock's son being arrested for drug dealing and to attempt to shorten his sentence by helping the FBI make similar arrests. Now this film is a drama and with that you need good acting and The Rocks kills it in his role and you truly believe the situation he has been placed in. Also all the supporting performances are good as well adding to this intriguing story. Another positive is the interesting realistic story which really is intriguing for the majority of the time. Towards the end of the film the action starts and this isn't anywhere near as interesting as the story and just feels like a generic chase scene. Also because this is a drama there are some really slow parts in this film but overall I thought It was a well acted film with great suspense.
