Set in 1977, back when sex was safe, pleasure was a business and business was booming, idealistic porn producer Jack Horner aspires to elevate his craft to an art form. Horner discovers Eddie Adams, a hot young talent working as a busboy in a nightclub, and welcomes him into the extended family of movie-makers, misfits and hangers-on that are always around. Adams' rise from nobody to a celebrity adult entertainer is meteoric, and soon the whole world seems to know his porn alter ego, "Dirk Diggler". Now, when disco and drugs are in vogue, fashion is in flux and the party never seems to stop, Adams' dreams of turning sex into stardom are about to collide with cold, hard reality.

It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

This movie has an insanely talented cast that's loaded with creativity. From start to finish, this movie is an absolute Original which was very well written and directed. Also, the soundtrack perfectly flows throughout from start to finish. This is an action, drama, comedy, pornographic documentary all rolled into one. I hav shown it to many friends & co-workers at my firehouse. Becomes an instant hit and classic that gets better each time you see it. Yea, that's right.

Boogie NightsThe adrenaline rush never wears down even though the feature fluctuates a lot through this more than 150 minutes of journey and this is where it stands alone; the sheer sharp and cunning script of it. Paul Thomas Anderson has its name written all over the frame that is perfectly balanced on this character and plot driven feature where if not for his execution, it would have been difficult to pull off such a powerful script. Mark Wahlberg is brilliant in his portrayal and is supported well enough by a great cast like Julianne Moore, William H. Macy and Heather Graham. Boogie Nights not only has enough content to feed the audience but is celebrated with a great conviction with the help of stellar performances, amazing background score and explicit editing and execution.

Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham, William H. Macy and John C. Reilly star in this 1997 drama. This takes place from the late 70's to early 80's centering on young man, Eddie (Wahlberg) who rises to fame as a porn star, Dirk Diggler, but falls into the dark world of greed and drugs along with his friends & colleagues. Reynolds (Smokey & The Bandit) plays director, Jack, Moore (Hannibal) plays porn actress, Amber, Graham (License to Drive) plays waitress turned porn actress, Rollergirl, Macy (Fargo) plays Jack's assistant/producer, Bill and Reilly (Step-Brothers) plays Dirk's pal & co-star, Reed. Don Cheadle (Out of Sight), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and porn legends, Nina Hartley and Veronica Hart also appear. This is a good drama and Wahlberg (Ted) & the cast are great in it. I recommend this.

Boogie Nights is an ensemble cast of characters in 1970's and 1980's Los Angeles. It is also the first great piece of work from writer director Paul Thomas Anderson, whom has gone on to become one of the best American writer/directors working today. I enjoy Boogie Nights more then say Goodfellas and Short Cuts. I feel it is more accessible and its characters are all very likable. It definitely borrows from those earlier great works mentioned, it also has a fabulous soundtrack. Great performances from Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, and helped launch very successful careers for almost all of the supporting cast. The directing here is fantastic, the opening shot being a stand out and the shot following the lady into the swimming pool. A great scene later on with fire crackers is also brilliant. I highly recommend this film, however the subject matter may put some viewers off. It is a great piece of work from Paul Thomas Anderson and one of 1990's best films.
