I Am Sam (2001)
Sam, a neurodivergent man, has a daughter with a homeless woman who abandons them when they leave the hospital, leaving Sam to raise Lucy on his own. But as Lucy grows up, Sam's limitations as a parent start to become a problem and the authorities take her away. Sam convinces high-priced lawyer Rita to take his case pro bono and in turn teaches her the value of love and family.

Why so much hype?
Just what I expected
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
The acting in this movie is really good.
Nuuuuuuuuuh, Duuuuuuh, Fuuuuuuuck - i am a dummy who sit's on a swing with my 7 year old daughter with a look on my face that infers sexual arousal (blatantly on purpose - so him & his fellow paedophile kind throughout the world can laugh at this shite in truly horrible insect fashion). The entire movie is made just so sean penn can be mr popular (a trick he repeated with 'milk') amongst his cruel bastard kind in arseholeville California. An obvious farce of a film, blatantly making fun of the handicapped - making a fool of anyone who believes that this despicable schitt is sincere & generally insulting to the intelligence of an normal human (Not Sean Penn & Co) being!But again, i'm probably just stating the Mcgoo obvious!!!
I Am Sam is a 2001 film starring A list actors: Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Dakota Fanning. The films cast and their abilities is a very big part of why this movie works well. Sean Penn delivers one of the best performances of his entire career. He plays the mentally handicapped father role so well. And Michelle Pfeiffer plays the hardened going 24/7 lawyer who gets softened by Sam. And she does it beautifully. There are some scenes where Pfeiffer and Penn just absolutely steal the show with their performance and you are completely memorized by them, that's what makes this film so good. And Dakota Fanning is very impressive for her age here, she handles dramatic heavy scenes very well and that's probably why she has gone on to continue a successful Hollywood career. The writing is good overall, I will say that the script isn't the strongest thing in the world but it is good. I think the screenplay and the execution of the plot takes a little bit of a backseat to the magnificent performances given. But that doesn't mean that the screenplay is weak, because it's not. Overall, I definitely suggest I Am Sam to any and everyone! It's a touching well done film about love and connection. 8/10.
Fantastic movie. The acting, plot and soundtrack are all wonderful. I'm not sure why some people were confused by the ending. I thought it was pretty clear where Lucy ended up. This movie is at once hilarious, sweet, gut-wrenching, realistic and maddening, and not necessarily for the faint of heart. I love Sam's love for his daughter; it made me wish I had a father like Sam! Love really is what's most important. I believe that was the main point of this movie, and I totally agree. Sam's friends are hilarious, and Lucy is such an intriguing, precocious character. Some really good life lessons in this film. Very touching. I will definitely be watching again and recommending to my friends. (=
I am sam is rated 7.6 at IMDb and considerably low at metacritic.com.Over the time since I first watched the movie. I believed if the conclusion was not in the favour of Sam but visiting rights were in his favour would have been excellent ending.The end however is more or less similar as Sam wants someone to be lucy's mother. It means it still fall in favour of critic's. Metacritic still has low rating, which leaves one wondering why! I recommend this movie. Nice emotional take.
