It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

In the near future, mercenary Toorop (Vin Diesel) is hired by Russian mobster Gorsky (Gérard Depardieu) to smuggle Aurora (Mélanie Thierry) from an isolated convent to New York City in six days. They are joined by her guardian Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh). Noelite High Priestess (Charlotte Rampling) eagerly waits for their arrival. Toorop finds his old friend Finn (Mark Strong) to help smuggle them into America. It's a slightly different dystopia. It holds some promise but director Mathieu Kassovitz lacks the visual confidence to bring it to life. The action is manic without the thrills. The bigger problem is the lack of tension. Despite lots of action, the story is rather bland. I never care about any of the characters or their journey. The three international leads don't have chemistry together. The dialog isn't anything to write home about either. It could use some good jokes and somebody funny to deliver them. Something confusing happens in the second half which loses any chance I have with this movie. This is a waste.

this film Babylon Ad:2008 is based on a novel & directed by a french director Matthew Kassovitz.hold on guys let me say this even i though the whole cast got wasted here but ever wonder why because of the terrible editing by the studio the director of this film was angry over this he has every right to be paramount does this a lot but fox should not let their fans down i like their movies it is one of the biggest studio in Hollywood one of my favorite if anyone at fox is reading this please take note.i agree with critics & people who say this film could have been better if the run-time was longer as a lot of action scenes are chopped of specially the car chase scene during the climax where Vin Diesel is blowing things up it looked cool i saw the film it was missing i checked out the censorship report with comparisons of different versions on DVD i say forget those guys it is not worth the money fox needs to release the full uncut version the film would make much more sense.the director blamed fox studio saying they never allowed him to shoot the film as he wanted sad day in history of filmmaking i say i don't know this always happens to foreign directors same thing happened with John Woo almost his every film got edited by Hollywood this is disrespectful.not only during the production but even after the post production studio was interfering now this is being called a french film i am sorry it is a typical Hollywood disaster so please stop saying it is a french film french films are masterpieces because their studios make wise decisions unlike ones in North America. the cast:Vin Diesel looked out of shape but in the shower scene he looks sexy with hairy chest so i sat through this only for him this is definitely one of his weakest performance ever,Michelle Yeoh & Charlotte Rampling got wasted but Melanie Thierry is a nice eye candy but she can do some serious acting if given the right material.the plot:set in the future this is the story of a smuggler who is banned from entering USA he gets a job to deliver a girl inside USA but things don't go easy as always the bad guys are coming after him.the theme was nice it was a interesting concept and had the usual science fiction mixed with mythical & religious nonsense etc.it looked like a road trip movie i tried to enjoy this only because of Vin Diesel even he could not save this mess of a project what is here to talk about direction honestly it was nicely done but hey it don't even matter as a action junkie i would say this movie is crap but on the other hand as a person who likes films with great plots and narratives i would say this film would have nailed it i mean it it could have been the best film of the last decade but sadly the fox studio is responsible for this mess there is too much editing done it looks like the editors wanted to make a mash-up dance video this is why the characters are loose cannons & film don't make much sense no matter what.Overall Babylon A.D:2008 is only for hardcore Vin Diesel fans only i have to say i am one so i watched this only for him my rating is 3/10.

I thought this film was relatively far fetched however, easy to get into if watched from the start. I thought the story line and quality of acting was good and really got me into the film. It is quite complicated and requires full attention if you are to follow and understand the story line. However, the whole reason for me writing this review was to share my disappointment of the ending. I found the ending of this film awful and gave the story line no point. If this film were to have a good ending I would have given it a much higher rating but I felt that it was contradicting of the story line. I would recommend this film for people who like futuristic and sci-fi films but if not this film isn't for you.

Vin Diesel returns to the action film genre in this interesting post war look at the world where governments are no longer in control. Vin is a mercenary for hire, ready to retire and call it quits, but unable to return to the US. Gerard Depardieu plays an interesting role as Gorsky, the stereotypical Russian mob boss whose only interest is the base things in life and what he can do to have them. Michelle Yeoh gives a formidable performance as Sister Rebecca, and I am certain she was chosen for her obvious skills as both actress and karate master. The film moves well, has the right amount of tension between the players, and never deviates from the plot, which in itself is basic. The scenery and graphics are good, but you can tell the director is not getting his way with the film. Apparently, there were a lot of disagreements between the director and the studio, and the infighting is obvious when you watch the film and listen to the dialog. Hat's off to Vin Diesel, who turned down the lead in "Hitman" to be in this film. Talk about bad choices, but how can you know? Rated PG-13, which in this case is so wrong for a movie of this type, the violence never rises above the level of a video game, so the kids are pretty safe, and the language, well, they've heard it before. Personally I would love to see this one remade in about 10 years with the director being in charge. Give it David Twohy, he'd know what to do with it. A good rental, not a collectible.
