Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.

I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

first, it a seductive meet with a special couple - Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. than, it is a story between eccentric and touching. because it is a love story. sure, unconventional. but not real different by the many other who defines powerful feelings using dark humor, crazy situations, a true story with big emotional impact. and all them does the film a surprise for the viewer looking for familiar scenes/message and expecting the clue of a film who has the important virtue to use the right actors for a bitter story about happiness.

Last night I watched this movie for the third time. I was impressed even more than before by the sheer skill of the screenplay, of the editing, and of the performances. I then went online and read some reviews and found aspects of them baffling. Whilst many critics admired the film, some found a lack of sexual chemistry between the two male leads. This is rubbish. Perhaps it's projection on the part of straight journalists, nervy about such stirrings in themselves. Jim Carrey and and Ewan McGregor make a lovely couple. McGregor in particular is wonderful as the long-suffering, trusting, gentle and somewhat feather-brained Phillip Morris. Put this performance beside his tour de force in YOUNG ADAM and you'll get a sense of his remarkable acting range. Range is not something that Carrey can boast but well-cast he can be excellent and there really isn't anyone who could match him here. Perfect casting. Some critics also complain that the film slows down after its bravura opening section. Not true. It just changes pace. It has to: if it didn't it would be like an hour-and-a-half video game. What we have here is a brilliantly written, well-performed, shrewdly judged piece of writing, based on events which, as the opening credits remind us, actually happened. It really did. I've no doubt I'll keep coming back to I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS. If you haven't seen it yet, please do.

I Love You Philip Morris is based on a true story of a real life con man Steven Russell. Playing Steve Russell is Jim Carrey in his best acting performance to date. This indie film is a very well structured drama/comedy that has strong storytelling, great acting and direction and large doses of black humor. The story starts as Steve Russell living a straight life as a cop with his wife and daughter. After an automobile accident he decides to come out of the closet and live his life as a gay man. He soon realizes that to maintain his lavish and flamboyant lifestyle require more than his honest job wage can suppliment. So, he orchestrates a series of scams that put him in prison. He then meets the love of his life, Philip Morris and as the romance escalates, so does the scams. Jim Carrey is brilliant in this role and Ewan Mc Gregor deserves a lot of credit as well. I have no idea how much of this story is truth or fiction, but it is a remarkable story. Overall the film is very smart, funny and well made. Great movie.

When I was about to see this one I didn't know a thing about it so, for like the first time (almost ^^), I went "quasi" blank and with one bad review from a friend of mine. Got to say for moments I thought this movie was like a soap opera but in dominant homosexual environment. I was wrong! It was a con-movie with a very neutral way in relation of showing the life of a gay man. J. Carrey and E. McGregor were great. Ewan done a fantastic performance and Jim has done some incredible scenes showing some true and false flaws (I think) in the law system of Texas. Direction wise I must refer there was an awesome work playing around with the viewer (it had to be done to be a good con-film) in order to surprise almost always (to the end was predictable but I've been caught with it). Good film for the those who don't respect homosexuality
