This was by far the best Amityville film since the original. The film starts off like all other haunted house films with a new family moving into a haunted house. This one does stand out from the crowd, though. It is really haunting and creepy. The film also has depth and emotion unlike any other Amityville film (or haunted house film for that matter), especially thanks to Cameron Monaghan's character, who we root for. The visuals are incredible, yet very subtle. This was simply freakin' awesome! The film features a beautiful sore, too.

Narration begins about the history of the Amityville house. Of course, Belle (Bella Thorne) moves with her mother Joan (Jennifer Jason Leigh), sister Juliet, and comatose brother James into the house proclaimed as a "passage to hell." At school, Belle learns about the notorious history. Then, James starts to show signs of life. The actors try their best, but fail. Also, the unusual surreal structure (inane horror happens, Belle wakes up from dream) manages to present an infinitesimal amount of horror. The actions of the characters are ridiculous. While there are moments of horror, the moments contain only jump scares and eliminate dread, suspense, tension, and terror. Making this film appear underdeveloped and formulaic. The narrative provides "meta" moments which detracts from the horror. Additionally, cliches abound throughout the story making the film derivative. Some camera angles are a little too dark, and squinting is a requirement. "Amityville: The Awakening" is a fatefully dull horror experience.

So the Amityville series continues. What this is like overall a tenth film. The last one was a decade ago. I'm okay with their idea of bringing it up. But there's nothing new in it. Only it was a different cast and timeline. So basically, you probably have seen this story in other flicks.A family of a single mother with one child with a serious medical condition moves into the most popular haunted house, the Amityville. The other one, a teen girl discovers the rumours from her new schoolmates. But the mother won't heed to it, till unusual events begin to unfold. So how it all ends are the rest of the film. The cast was good, and that's it, the film was average. If you are a big fan of horror, then this would be even a worse film, because you might have seen hundreds of similar flicks. I think Amityville franchise is dead, because of bad storied films. Otherwise with good filmmakers, particularly the writer, it could come back to the old glory. So now, it's not that worth. I would suggest to check it out other horrors released in this year.5/10
