It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

I had the misfortune of seeing this movie last night. Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell's names on the credits had me worried (neither could be called acting heavyweights) but there was enough talent on show (Tom Wilkinson in particular) to make it worth a punt.15 minutes in and I was literally laughing out loud - both McGregor (a Scot) and Farrell's (an Irishman) London accents were unbelievably poor. Like the dialect/language coach had gone on strike, or hadn't even been hired. More Dick Van Dyke than Ray Winstone I'm afraid. The script? A lot of the screenplay sounds improvised, there are audible pauses in some of the conversations which suggest the actors were given a lot of rope here - but they're just not up to the job, plain and simple. McGregor mugs constantly, over-thinking every utterance, Farrell just looks lost most of the time, unable to conjure the emotional turmoil his character goes through, it all looks and sounds very am-dram.Philip Glass's score is another sore point - the edgy, syncopated strings sounds like they've been dropped in from another movie, they just don't suit the movie at all. A missed opportunity I think, I'm a huge fan of Glass's work.I wont bore you any further with my review; definitely the worst Allen movie I have ever seen (I've seen most of them) bad casting, bad script, poor choice of score and the cinematography looks more like a TV movie than a decently-budgeted movie.Avoid like the plague.

I had recently talked to a friend about how much we both enjoyed "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", and she labeled that film as "an explosion of feelings". I instantly agreed with that, and while I was watching "Cassandra's Dream", that's all that came in my mind: an explosion of feelings. McGregor and Farrell professionally portray two brothers that commit a murder in order to help their uncle, and as tough as it can be, one of them starts having mental problems because of it. The relationship between the brothers is extremely convincing, mainly due to the great directing that Woody Allen provides, again. It feels hard not to put ourselves in the positions of Ian and Terry; it was undoubtedly a quite hard situation to deal with. The first hour of the movie is full of conversations, and it tired me a bit, but once the brothers get in the victim's house, I felt like SCREAMING for such an intense first climax-- in my opinion, there are two of them. The only thing I really disliked about this film was the rushed ending, and I'm sure many people really hated it, but that's an eccentric way to end the story. We don't always need to see all that happens next; sometimes it's good to leave up to the spectator what is the next step. All in all, "Cassandra's Dream" is another GREAT work from Woody Allen, and you can realize that after the first hour of length.

I thought this film was mediocre. I used to be a Woody Allen fan in the 1970's with films like Annie Hall, Play It Again Sam, and Sleeper, so mostly comedies, with sharp dialog. However, Cassandra's Dream just falls flat. I found the acting to be thin. Ewan Macgregor was hardly believable; it seemed like he had trouble doing the stupid things his character was doing. Colin Farrell as his brother had some good moments, and then some moments where he just was not believable. The most disturbing character was Ewan's girlfriend, whom he suddenly falls in love with after one meeting? This wench/slut who seems to have a shady life. Come on, after 2 times Ewan decides this girl is the best thing that ever happened to him? Maybe that was Woody being Woody, but it was hard for me to relate to that emotional shift. You could definitely feel that this was a Woody Allen dialog. Lots of thoughts and emotions and I should haves and I love you and I hate you and pulling you emotionally left and then right. But the acting didn't deliver, and the plot just never grabs you.Tom Wilkinson and Colin Farrell's girlfriend did a decent job of acting, but the Uncle's choices, again, were difficult to believe. As to the ending, I don't know why people thought it came suddenly. This movie had to end somewhat tragically, because there was really no place left to end it, and it was Woody moralizing about human behavior. All told, I'd skip this unless you are a big Colin Farrell and Ewan Macgregor fan. You may be somewhat entertained by their acting, despite the weak plot. As for me, I prefer to stay awake and skip my trip aboard the sinking ship called Cassandra's Dream.

Woody Allen's latest foray into the thriller realm is an extremely compelling story of family ties and murder. Before the murderous game is afoot Allen spends a good deal of time setting up his characters with multiple layers and nuances. Two regular working class English brothers each hoping their rich uncle will help them out financially must first complete a murderous task. What makes this film so intense and highly suspenseful is that Woody Allen has created a pair of very believable characters in Ian (Ewan McGregor) and Terry (Colin Farrell). As they conptemplate the dreadful task of murdering an associate of their uncle, we are sucked right into this frightening dilemma with them. Allen's movie is so strong because it examines the daunting task and repercussions accepted by the brothers. This is not some standard Hollywood, glossed over, thriller where people are knocked off and life goes on. Woody Allen ratchets up the tension in every frame and his film is so exciting because it is so very real. McGregor and Farrell turn in some terrific performances as the two brothers. McGregor is in top form as the manipulative, deal maker. Without question Colin Farrell has turned in his most memorable performance yet. Farrell's character Terry is a very gentle soul, a complete opposite from anything he has ever played, a stellar performance that is both beautiful and tragic. Cassandra's Dream is a very entertaining film, it will make you think, it will make you squirm and it will stay with you long after you've exited the theater.
