I was happy to have the opportunity to view three films based on vc Andrews omnibus flowers in the attic. this film is not a thrill ride and is preety depressing... a film an actress probably really doesn't want to do, and whoever had had the idea must be really freaky with the adoptive twin and incestual issues as well as a mute happening simultaneously, that's was a wild find.... in rare movie form for those interested in what women are thinking and doing while not being US LOVE phone operators for their fathers friends, drug dealers and whichever imaginary masturbatory polygamyideal they have conquered within their heads

Similar to American Beauty, the 1999 Academy Award Winner for Best Picture, "The Quiet" is even more disturbing. For among its themes about disabilities, murder, hidden lesbianism, and inhumanity, it also features incest. The revelation about incest is no spoiler, as you will be able to pick it up early on. Teen Dot (Camilla Belle), a deaf-mute who lost both parents, moves into the three-member household of the Deer family: mother Olivia (Edie Falco), father Paul (Martin Donovan), and teen daughter Nina (Elisha Cuthbert). The family is troubled. Passive mom cannot seem to get dad's attention, no matter what she does, even if she strips down to her underwear. Olivia, addicted to prescription pharmaceuticals, may even be losing her mind. And, although both teen girls are very attractive, Nina treats Dot awfully. She is relentless about her actions, which continue in school among her friends. Nina is a virginal cheerleader who hangs out with annoying, trash-talking school chum Katy (Michelle Fell). Katy is hot for school basketball player Connor (Shawn Ashmore). Dot is a brooding introvert, an undeveloped personality who wears dull clothing and is friendless. Nina is also traumatized (but in an opposite way from Dot), and finds an unusual way of coping. Over time, despite their appearances as polar opposites, there is a gradual erosion of detachment. In fact both young ladies actually have much in common, and even share double lives. Meanwhile Dot harbors a secret that completely alters events once it is revealed, but it won't happen early on. Meanwhile, daddy is an ogre and admits it. The title of course refers to Dot, the heroine of the movie. People think she is oblivious to the world situation, but she sucks up information like a sponge. The incest scenes are very painful to stomach. Like "American Beauty" before it, the film parodies the dysfunctional family. But then again, the acting is fine all around, and the character development is well-done. And note the symbolism, the darkened rooms of the household and the rooms almost devoid of furniture. They tell us of the sinister secrets lurking about. On the other hand, what is the purpose of this movie? Where is it supposed to be heading? Although there are eerie elements, the sordid story is not really exciting. And the ending, although there is a twist, is not exactly uplifting.

Wow this movie is both depressing and pathetic. Nothing makes sense or seems to fit. I'm also not sure I believe the characters. They feel weird, unlikable and completely unrealistic. In reality I don't feel that the cast of characters would ever find themselves in this situation. Everybody is drowning in self-pity and hatred. All the actors are talented though but they can only do so much with the material they are given.I understand where the writers were going with this film but I think they took it too far. There is not enough of an actual storyline to keep you interested instead they tried to fill the entire movie with every horrible thing that could ever happen to a person. I don't completely hate this movie but it just feels like overkill. On another note the ending was way better than the entire rest of the movie.

I for one hadn't even heard of this movie, until I was flipping thru a magazine and noticed some sexy pictures of Elisha Cuthbert from a 2005 entry titled "The Quiet". And as many would agree Elisha is some fine eye candy any appearance from her is a must watch! After viewing "The Quiet" it was indeed a treat for other reasons the film does have an interesting story to it as it's theme and genre brushes all the elements of suspense, drama, romance, and eroticism. Plus the film twist when hidden secrets are revealed as it's all tied in with a connection of sex, lies, and betrayal.A suburban couple(Edie Falco of TV's "The Sopranos" and Martin Donovan of "Weeds") are trying to raise two teenage daughters all along while trying to cope with their inner demons of medication addiction pill popping and a girl daddy complex. The original daughter Nina(Elisha Cuthbert as cute and sexy as ever) is the sexy pretty popular sassy cheerleader who's attracts all the guys, yet it's with the arrival of a second daughter a godchild Dot(Camilla Belle)who was taken in after her parents death that all the attention is focused in on. Dot is a strange alienated young girl who's apparently deaf and mute supposedly she can read lips and she receives the most comfort from piano playing.Slowly the girls develop a bonding relationship as Dot wraps the entire family up as they all can use her as a board to balance emotions. Then the film starts to twist as secrets are revealed about both girls, as clearly Dot has kept some big secrets buried for so long and Nina will confess a dark and wicked secret that needs to be addressed even though it will destroy all in the family. Also just to mention you as the viewer are treated to a couple of scenes of Elisha in a dark purple silk colored bra, I cherished those they were certainly screen savers and worth pausing the film just to get an extended look.Anyway to sum it up "The Quiet" even though no big name movie is worth a watch for it's surprises and twist that proves everyone has secrets and they are best to be revealed as people can only hold lies for so long, because as you reveal them yourself it's less painful in the end. Plus the cast was top notch especially Falco and Donovan and to see the sexy and juicy eye candy performance from Elisha Cuthbert will satisfy your hunger and give you a tasty feel.
