It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

I seriously thought of rating this full stars when I started seeing this anime but around halfway everything went wrong for me. The anime is truly a battle between two great and intelligent minds who want to kill each other. The episodes are all thrilling to watch and I personally loved it but around the second half one of the centre character dies and are replaced but two other who couldn't fill his gap completely. That's the sole reason I didn't give full stars. It's still a must watch anime if you ask me.

I admit it I'm a Death Note fanboy, the anime was a masterpiece and truly one of the most intelligent well written pieces of television ever made. The American adaptation was a travesty, an embarrassment of colossal proportions which missed the entire point of the series and I was concerned about the Japanese version purely because I can't imagine telling that epic a story in 90 minutes.Immediately I was taken by the solid casting, this was Light and L was sheer unadulterated perfection and a stark contrast to the American version who was the weakest link of the entire film. The movie is a compact version of the first half of the anime with some slight differences/tweaks near the end which actually change the story quite a bit. Honestly I didn't mind as they were done so well as was the rest of the film.So where does it go wrong? Well it doesn't really, but be aware this is part 1. Even I didn't realise that and will be shortly venturing into the finale. I always hate movies which aren't self contained and without part 2 this is merely part of a story. The final moment of this however was outstandingly done 10/10.If you like the anime I recommend this, yes it's essentially the same story but a valid adaptation that deserves your time.Well written, fantastically acted, a near masterpiece. The Good: It's Death Note Very well made, written and filmed Extremely well castThe Bad:Red Hot Chilli Peppers was the weirdest choice for a credits song Ryuk sfx are really quite weak Things I Learnt From This Movie: If a person has a gun to their head, point a gun at them as well that'll show em!The US had no excuse for not making a decent Death Note movie

As an avid fan of Asian cinema, I must say that somehow both the Anime series and the live action movie of "Death Note" (aka "Desu nôto") eluded me, even though I have had the three movies on my DVD shelves for about a year. Then I saw that part one had a rating of 8 on IMDb, so I finally sat down to watch it.It wasn't as good as I had hoped for or expected it to be, especially since it had the rating of 8. Perhaps it is because I never read the comic or seen the Anime. I must say that I found it to be merely mediocre. It had potential, but just never really rose to a noteworthy climax.Ryuk, the God of Death, was interesting enough, but the CGI was just a bit too poor. And actor Tatsuya Fujiwara was like an Asian version of Nicolas Cage; unable to portray more than a single facial expression. However, the actor who stole the show was Ken'ichi Matsuyama. He was really well-cast for the role of L.Story-wise then I found "Death Note" to be fairly weak and offering the audience not all that much actually."Death Note" scores a mere five out of ten stars from me. This wasn't the brightest moment in Japanese cinema.

I really enjoyed this movie. There were some slight differences between the movie and the anime, like Raye's last name, where Light finds the Death Note, and not using Near or Mello (which could be understood if they didn't want to make another sequel). The English Dub of this movie is the original cast in the anime, which I really liked and got use to the voices from the anime. They picked great actors and the effects were good. Mastuda in the English Dub is my favorite, he's hilarious. I love how every scene with L, he's always eating candy or something sugary. Plus it was really cool how they used computer effects to make Ryuk come alive as a Shinigami. Overall, this movie is great with bringing us into the life of Light and L in their battle for justice. Besides some differences, the movie comes close to being similar to the anime and the manga. So for those who liked the anime, you'll enjoy the Death Note movie as well.
