A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

Miracle on 34th Street is a splendid film, full of wonder and lovable characters. This is the best Christmas film I've seen to date. Maureen O'Hara was particularly wonderful. I wasn't sure whether to watch this, I thought maybe Christmas movies were past me, but this is a film for adults, a real keeper. It was pleasant without being fluffy at all and it doesn't try and over do it. Writer and director George Seaton did "The Country Girl" with Grace Kelly, which was great also.

Gimbel's is out-of-business and of course the cars and clothes are so 1940's! Nothing gets pasted and glued anymore and the competing "ads" would all be scanned! However, the story is so deliciously unique. A perfectly cast Maureen O'Hara (with her Irish brogue)) and Natale Wood as her sophisticated child, who doesn't know any fairy tales at all. . Edmund Gwynne is the best Santa Claus ever! A great supporting cast as well. "Kris Kringle" almost lets himself be committed to "Bellevue" Mental Hospital because he doesn't think anyone believes in Santa anymore. As other reviewers said: Social comment abounds as women are not taken as "seriously" as men and a personnel "expert" gives a young boy damaging psychological advice. The courtroom scenes are dazzling and do not slow down the action at all. (It's a sanity hearing and not a trial.) Santa get "off" because he is recognized by the Postal Service, as bags of letters get dumped on the judge's desk. Originally colorized (and just broadcast that way) but currently only available in black and white.

This has become one of the only two movies that has become a yearly must see tradition...the other one, It's a Wonderful Life, has a different theme, yet is every bit as traditional as this movie...Miracle tells the tale of Kris Kringle, a gentle, somewhat eccentric old man, who is hired by Maureen O'Sullivan as the official Santa at Macy's Department store. The warmth, and humor begin right away, as Kris begins a marketing campaign by sending shoppers to other stores, if Macy doesn't carry the product. It lands him in hot water, but Mr Macy himself sees the tremendous goodwill that such a move will bring to the store...From there, Kris finds a challenge in convincing Maureen's daughter that there really is a Santa Claus. He wins her over, then finds a bigger challenge in bringing Mom around...It isn't so much that a fantasy movie was produced so well, it is the way it is told that grabs everyone, young and old alike. Miracle on 34th Street is timeless entertainment, that never loses it's magic...

"Do you believe in Santa Claus?" is the big question in this festive classic from 1947, that features a stellar performance from a young Natalie Wood.I had only seen the 90's remake of this film written by John Hughes previously, but it's interesting to now compare/contrast and see how little that film adds to the original story. It was a little slow in places, but I liked the ending much better and thought that everybody involved gave wonderful performances. If any film deserves the title of 'festive classic' it's this one.
