Marmaduke (2010): Dir: Tom Dey / Voices: Owen Wilson, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Kiefer Sutherland, Stacy Furguson: Idiotic piece of dog dung based on the popular comic strip. Marmaduke is a Great Dane in a not so great story. He describes himself as a teenage dog living with the typical family until they move to Orange County. His owner works for a business that specializes in vegetarian pet food and they travel to a dog park to discuss business. Meanwhile, Marmaduke learns that the dog park is dominated by a big black dog named Bosco who takes an immediately dislike to our Great Dane when he is caught talking to the wrong female dog. The human characters are bland with Marmaduke's owner given dialogue that mainly consists of him yelling out his dog's name. Owen Wilson voices Marmaduke, a Great Dane skilled in a variety of activities including break dancing. Emma Stone voices that overlooked female dog who helps Marmaduke get sophisticated with the popular dog crowd. George Lopez voices Carlos the cat who goes out too much on a limb for Marmaduke. Kiefer Sutherland voices bully Bosco who threatens Marmaduke but viewers know that he will lose his position at dog park. Even singer Fergie gets in on this action also she will find nothing Fergalicious about it. Director Tom Dey previously made Shanghai Noon and Showtime. Here he is backed by terrible special effects including lame footage of dogs surfing. Since a dog could drown in such conditions, I found this greatly non amusing. This film should be buried in the backyard with the bones. Score: 2 / 10

It a cute film for the tots and the DVD might be a good investment for their DVD library. The story seemed so familiar to me and then I realized that it was the same plot from the John Hughes script for 1987's "Some Kind of Wonderful" directed by Howard Deutch and starring Eric Stolz and Mary Stuart Masterson as Keith and Watts who have the same relationship as Marmaduke and the female best friend while he pines for that other....b..(I won't say it). The human part of the film is dull, and I imagine it will also be for the children. Fortunately, The director does not focus on that even though the supporting cast has William H Macy who plays the role of an owner of an organic pet food company that brings the family from KC to OC. My personal favorite scene is the surfing dogs.

When I first heard that Marmaduke got his own movie, I was satisfied. When I watch it, I was like "Dude, this is supposed to be a cartoon movie not a dopey version of High School Musical!". If I were making this movie, I'd make a few changes. 1) Kill the High School theme. It's better if the high school style involved only humans. 2) Next time, get Jim Carrey or Tom Hanks to play Marmaduke. 3) Tone down the innuendo in the movie. 4) How about you let Robin Williams play the cat? 5) Kill the party scene and the beach surfing scene. 6) Make it a cartoon because live-action is less appealing. 7) Fire the director, the computer animators, and the producer. 8) Tone down the language a wee bit. And 9) Make Marmaduke younger. Sadly, the film-makers have neither sense nor a brain to figure out what the heck was wrong with the movie. Don't believe me? Buy it on DVD and find out.

Yay!!! Wonderful film!!! I've watched it at least a hundred times!!! The protagonist, marmaduke, is a totally believable mutt from Kansas. He is so cute and if I am reborn as a dog, I would love to come back as Jezebel. And the bad guy, Boscoe, is totally evil. He is really really scary (played by Kiefer Sutherland). And the surfing in it is really cute and hilarious. Dogs on surfboards hahaha brilliant!!! But the true winner in this movie is Barbara, marmaduke's owner (Phil's) daughter, who is struggling to make friends in a new place. Totally believable!!! She has a crush on this cool surfer boy named Bodie. hehehe. Thats so Cali, you know what I mean!!! This just makes me want to go to the beach and lay out in the sun for hours. Also William H. Macy's brilliant portrayal of Phil's boss, the owner of an organic dog food company (haha I know) really makes my spirit soar. When marmaduke wins the surfing competition, I was like this movie is def on my top 10 list. So coooool!!!!!!!! Go see this movie immediately if you a) love dogs and b) love California cultural pieces like the OC and/or Saved By the Bell!!! Love yalll!!!!!!!
