hyped garbage
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
The general low rate given to the film can only be explained by the prejudice to the theme, the Western disinterest in debating Africa. Surely the movie is not so weak to have a 4.7 rating. Anyway, the movie is hard, very hard to watch. It shows one side of African life that no one in the West cares to know, much less give way to. And though a lot of people might think that the realism that Sean Penn employs in some scenes is exaggerated, in fact the real hell out there is much worse than in the movie. In addition we have the hard life of the doctors, impotent in the face of so much cruelty, and who still have to maintain the dignity and the healthy mind to continue his heroic work. Not everyone can handle it. Good performance of Charlize and Javier, in a cast in general quite correct. Unfortunately not everything is perfect and the direction sometimes is irregular, breaking the tense and distressing rhythm of the movie with romantic moments. Still I give 7.0.
A very graphic depiction of the horrors of war in Africa and a love story. The acting is beyond reproach; which allows for the lack of depth to the plot. The plot; that of a love affair between two field doctors who struggle with their job (vocation) and their feelings for each other. The cinematography is excellent; coupled with the sound track makes for a emotional experience. I watched it back to back 2x the same evening.
Bardem is Bardem. An accomplished, serious actor. Theron has moved on from being a pretty face to being an actress. It is inconceivable that one who identifies as a critic could allege that this movie is "refugee porn." This movie is reality. It is well done, well acted, real and an eye-opener. Sean Penn makes a statement and it is a statement that should be made. Rotten Tomatoes and entities of its ilk should fold their tents and fade away.
Penn shows African reality. This film has nothing to do with dominating or discriminating African people, but shows the insanity of all wars. I was moved, angered and surprised by the marvelous acting in this film. Charlize Theron as well as Javier Bardem play more than convincing. Furthermore I could not discover any weak-played other parts. The film really shows the difference in being in the field or being a manager far from where it all takes place. At the same it shows the despondency that falls on you not having a solution in our economics-based society. Who says Penn as a director failed in this film, should clean his glasses and keep on taking part in the Penn-bashing gild of right wing puppets
