Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Too similar in story line to many other films and it lacks in personality and likability. The lead girl was so annoying and such a bad actor you just can't relate to her . On a personal level I didn't enjoy the asthetics , if the idea that the cgi was meant to look cheap then it worked but for me it was getting pretty boring to look at very quickly . Looked and felt like a short budget film found on amazon prime that you would avoid .

To quote another reviewer, this movie is "great for families and the Art crowd".I think especially for children, or to watch it with children would leave a empathetic and great impression with them, and as a reviewer I highly recommend it to watch as a family especially with (your) children. It otherwise is a homage to the fine arts with hand made masks, drawings, paintings and animation that isn't the perfect CGI, but the kind of creative and bizarre work you would see in featured fine-art animations, which I personally have a taste for and think I was happy to see it in a feature film. However, I could understand that certain viewers might think the special effects are somewhat outdated, and in my opinion I think they are not 'trying' to be realistic, but in any case it does create a divergent opinion about them. The movie is put together well, but might have been better as a TV series to explore the story, world and characters further. Still, the movie leaves you with a unique impression and a certain inspiration for the creative minds out there.

This could of been an amazing movie, but one thing was missing. The story was all in pieces. By the end you do get the whole point of the story. But up to that point it seems like so much is left out. The story rushes in parts way too much. This is such a shame because the visual and art aspect of it was simply beautiful. The cast was also amazing. Stephanie Leonidas was great and probably my favorite character was played by Jason Barry. He was very entertaining. Back to the visual of it all. Very artistically done. Jim Hensen helped with the film and using his mind with Dave McKean and the writers, they created such a strange yet satisfying world. It was like seeing a interesting child's dream with an overcast of a creepy tone. Because the story was so rushed, I started to get really annoyed watching the film, but luckily all the visuals really kept me interested enough to want to see more. Again, that is too bad. I really wanted this film to be great. I guess the writers had an imagination for the characters, but couldn't get the story down very well on paper.

MirrorMask had a great look and tons of potential, but the story just didn't hold up - especially in the all important second act.Gaiman, a solid and profound writer, created an excellent visual landscape, but his fantasy tale lacked conflict and excessive hardships for the characters. Yes, the characters were tested, but it was completely manageable. The actor's certainly shined in the eclectic atmosphere, but there were certain elements missing from each to drive the theme home and make the movie solid. If more time had been spent on a faster moving, cohesive and definitive story instead of CGI and puppetry, this would have been phenomenal.
