One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

Not one person in this film had any sense of courtesy except the main character. He continually tries to be polite and everyone is rude to him. It was quite frustrating that he would not throw a comment back at them, his ex-wife, daughter, professor, ex-girlfriend, not one polite conversation that I saw. But then again I lost interest in the film.

Would somebody please tell me who was Adrian, Jr.'s father...please? Is it supposed to be ambiguous or what? Did Adrian kill himself because he got Sarah pregnant, or is Tony the one responsible for the pregnancy. Thanks!

I like movies that amble along but are either headed for a deeper examination of life or an interesting view of it. This movie does neither. When the "there" is revealed I was left with only mild arousal. But then this is a British movie and they tend to make more out of less. Focusing on Broadbent's character leaves the viewer with a smaller, narrower vision of history, and perhaps that was the point. We humans hate to find out that our footprint is smaller than we hoped. I would have preferred the story the girlfriend, the best friend, and the mother would have revealed.

Here is everything for a good movie experience, a strong drama with some of the best in terms of actors, director, script, etc. But nevertheless, the movie is never really good. I just don't get it. The film alternates between the present and the past. It works fine. But the story is made more complicated than it actually is, and it is said too constrained and complicated. During the film I was waiting for clarifications, that come to late. Another problem with this movie is that it's too slow and long- lasting. It could certainly have been the cut, without it having been at the expense of the story. I also had problems getting to understand the main character, and to sympathize with him. He is too bland and it takes too long for the audience to understand what he wants and his reactions when the story is told. The best thing about the movie is a strong message and the good actors. Having said that, I still notice that Charlotte Rampling's character does not quite come true, and she becomes a figure I did not really understand and get to know. Maybe that's the meaning? Far from the best British drama.
