Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.

This might not be Todd Solondz's most surprising movie, but that is only because it is mainly a refinement of ideas and themes from his earlier movies. It is not quite up there with Palindromes or Happiness, bit it is still in the top 1 percent of all films ever made.In film after film he makes fun of the darkest parts of human existence, and somehow this makes real life easier to bear for a while. At least it does for me.

As a former fan of Todd Solondz' work, I was eager to view "Wiener-Dog". There were harbingers of disappointment in the first vignette, but not until the last 20 minutes of the film was I forced to resign myself to the sad reality that Solondz has become a victim of his own filmic nihilism in that he has become an auteur of ugly, boring, artistically hollow visions. His treatment of each of the separate narratives of this film reveals what one fears is an unintentionally autobiographical snapshot of his own fears as a film maker and a creator. The only redeeming moments in this rather masturbatory work come through some of the performances of the cast. However, for the regrettable experience that it is to fidget and sigh ones way through this film, it is still not worth the time, effort and disappointment required to view it - particularly if one is or ever was a fan of Solondz' work. Initially, I felt a pang of disappointment at seeing that Heather Matarazzo would not be reprising her role as Dawn... however, I quickly realized the blessing at not having this minor atrocity tread on her interpretation of the character. At least some part of Solondz' legacy was left unscarred by this film-- even it was only the characterization that a gifted child actor brought to the titular role in a previous incarnation. If you loved or cared for "Welcome to the Dollhouse", or any other Solondz' other, earlier works... steer clear of this one.

This was the worst movie I have ever seen. No redeeming message. These people were all horrible and weak and the sweet dog was the victim over and over. Nobody grows, nobody changes nobody does anything except randomly hurt the dog. The little boy in the beginning has the worst parents in the history of parents. The girl at the vet, after rescuing the dog becomes a complete victim to a drug addict. She gives the dog to a down syndrome couple who are more excited about the leash. A horrible film professor blows her up and then she is killed by a car and run over multiple times. There are many scenes of dog diarrhea, and very long time of seeing a completely smashed dog on the road and cars just go over and over and over and over her. A final treat was to see her stuffed in a museum. The best part was intermission.

Only good part of this film was first part.Remainder was very poor plus I lost communication of how this same dog was transferred from second to third to fourth owner. .At one stage I assumed it was different dog. Deleted from my library and time I will never regain watching something better. It was good to see Danny Devito on screen again and his scene where the dog was strapped with explosives may have been clearer as I assumed the dog was blown up. It's difficult to write more as it was not to my taste. The boy at the beginning could become a good actor as he was believable.A forgetful movie with very little in terms of substance for me to enjoy.perhaps the dog eating the bar of muesli.
