I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

'Lupin III: The Gold of Babylon' has somewhat of a bad reputation among Lupin fans, and it is not all that hard to see why. Personally didn't think it was that bad, but for a Lupin film it is disappointing.Have to agree that 'Gold of Babylon' is one of the weaker Lupin films, and that it has nothing on the previous two Lupin films. The very impressive first feature film of his, 'The Secret (goes under Mystery too depending on where you're from) of Mamo', despite a confused and strange final third it is the boldest Lupin film and the most faithful perhaps to the manga. And the outstanding 'The Castle of Cagliostro' (my first Lupin film and my favourite), also one of my favourite animated films and Lupin at his funniest and most exciting. It is watchable, though really for Lupin completests as a one-time viewing.Starting with the good things, most of the animation is not bad. The backgrounds are nicely detailed and fluid and the colours are lively. The music score is dynamic, beautiful and groovy and a good fit with what's going on.As always, Lupin's friends are very entertaining and it is hard not to image a Lupin film without film because they add so much. Some of the action is fun, if never on the same level as the helicopter, police and lorry chase in 'The Secret of Mamo' and particularly the opening chase sequence in 'The Castle of Cagliostro'. The voice acting is quite good.On the other hand, while the rest of the animation is not bad, the character designs are quite ugly and sloppy in movement. Particularly for the secondary characters, that are more at home in heavily stylised US animation. For those wanting humour and excitement, they will find themselves a little short-changed, there are odd splashes of humorous moments but too far and between and other action-oriented parts lack lustre (for a big Lupin chase sequence, this one is pretty pedestrian).Zenigata served very little point to the story and his subplot added nothing and felt rather irrelevant and the villain is shamefully underused and incredibly dull. Lupin is at his least likable and most annoying (when he is usually fun and charismatic) and there are stereotypes that won't bode well.Faring weakest here is the story, which has far too many uncomfortably bizarre touches that feel misplaced for Lupin and a lot of it is ludicrous and even for Lupin implausible. Then there is the final act, where the weird completely spirals out of control and the final twist is bizarrely ridiculous. In conclusion, has one-time completest watchability value but far too strange and proof that not everything to do with Lupin turns to gold. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Legend of the Gold of Babylon is Lupin's third animated adventure and is one of my least favorites in the series. After The Castle of Cagliostro, I didn't really expect any Lupin film to top it. It was a masterpiece. Nearly flawless. But I didn't expect a mindless, unfocused mess of a film to succeed it. In this film, Lupin is searching for the legendary Gold of Babylon. The legend says that the Babylonians pooled all their gold together into a single form. Some speculate it was a statue, some say others. So Lupin teams up with Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko once again to track down the treasure. Also assisted by a mysterious drunken old woman named Rosetta, Lupin finds he's not the only one looking for the gold. In his way is the villainous Marciano, who is obsessed with gold and would do anything to find the ancient treasure. Also in tow, is the bumbling Inspector Zenigata who is, of course, determined to have them all arrested. So, it's a great setup. Saying it like that makes it seem like a pretty exciting adventure. However, ti never pulls through and falls flat pretty quickly. One of the most noticeable problems is the animation. After two Lupin films with fantastic animation to rival Disney, this movie looks more like a Saturday Morning Cartoon. Now, there were many Lupin TV specials that looked like this, but this movie had a much bigger budget than those films.Another problem is Zenigata. Now, some people could say that Zenigata was just pointless comic relief in the last two movies, but in those films, he actually had a purpose. He contributed to the story. Here, the most he contributes to is the run-time. Basically, he has a subplot where a bunch of nominees for the "Miss ICPO Beauty Contest" are angered by the fact that they didn't win and tag along with Zenigata on his quest to arrest Lupin. First of all, why does the ICPO have a beauty contest? Yeah, way to show how strong and independent the women of the police are by showing them off as brainless sex symbols. But, to the ICPO's credit, I don't really think any of these women really have brains to begin with. Second of all, do the losers get this angry every year? Do they always have to go with another officer on a mission to blow off some steam? Third of all, this whole plot line is completely wasted. At first, I thought these women were going to be badass and their story would result in some pretty awesome action sequences, but all they do is goof around with Zenigata all day. Remember that episode of Family Guy where Stewie kidnaps the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and they just play around the entire episode? That's what this feels like.Another big disappointment was the villain, Marciano. He's hardly in the movie. And whenever he is, he doesn't really do anything interesting or particularly evil. He's just really boring. And his demise isn't really anything special to say the least. I won't spoil it, but trust me, it's really nothing to get worked up about. Finally, there's the third act. I've already written a review on The Mystery of Mamo and complained that the third act of that movie spiraled out of control and got a little too weird for me. Well, if you thought Mystery of Mamo was weird, then wait 'till you get a load of this. Again, I won't spoil it, but....... never, even in my meth-induced fantasies would I ever see anything like this in my life. The sheer amount of insanity that occurs during the climax is really the only reason to see this movie. So, those are my thoughts on Legend of the Gold of Babylon. As you probably guessed, I really didn't like it. Since I've seen the movie, I've learned that the director, Seijun Suzuki, has a reputation for caring more about visuals than about story and characters. If only I'd known that coming into this movie. But, it really does show. The visuals in this movie are very creative and the craziness near the end makes this, admittedly, a very unique film. That's really the only reason I gave this a 3 out of 10 instead of a 1. So, bottom line, I'm not saying don't see the movie. If you're a Lupin fan and you really do want to see it, then go ahead. Just proceed with caution. Or if you want your brain to leave your body for a couple of hours, even better. You're all set! Me personally, I probably wouldn't see it again.

Terrible Lupin mainly because if I'd seen this one first I probably would never have bothered with the rest - which if you are reading this and wondering about Lupin - are vastly superior. Lupin himself is reduced to a ridiculous figure one minute scrambling up walls to avoid an old woman's sexual advances then deriding Zenigata by having an incredibly boring motorbike race or something over a giant vertical face (It has to be seen to be believed - what were they thinking!) So please do not judge Lupin on this piece of trash - watch some of the others which are great fun.The plot is very predicable with Lupin 'working out' where the gold of Babylon is without any use of intelligence - it was pretty obvious about 30mins earlier before he headed off to Iraq. The aliens plot device bit is insane and adds nothing - maybe the Indy Jones Crystal Skull debacle was based on this! All in all get hold of any other Lupin and you will have a much better time.

This is the 3rd Lupin Anime film. It's suppose to have the similar style from the 3rd TV series. It takes place in New York mostly. Where we find Lupin being chased by Zenigata like always. After that he encounters an old woman who tells him that she holds the secret to the Gold of Babylon. Which is in fact the Babylon Tower itself that was meant to be the tallest structure known to man kind. As lupin progresses on his journey to unlooking the secret, he runs into the New York Mafia who also want the gold for themselves. With the help of his comrades and Zenigata using his own team of women to lure Lupin. This will be one crazy adventure for our favorite thief. This one is nothing compared to Secret of Mamo or Castle of Cagliostro. The animation is a little sloppy. Makes the animation in Secret of Mamo look better. Has some slap stick humor in it as well. It's more like seeing one of those Cartoon shows in the 80s.Has some laughs to it, but wouldn't say it's the best in the world.I wouldn't recommend it to other Die-hard Lupin fans. It's something to see every now and then, but not on the top 5 list of an anime website.I give it 6.5/10 for a decent Lupin anime to watch.
