Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.

A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

I found this movie on Netflix streaming movies. My wife chose to skip it, I think she made a mistake. It is a very pleasant relationship movie. One of the reasons I enjoyed it is for the beer theme. Much of it is set inside a small brewery (filmed in Chicago) and many of the characters work there, making beer, drinking beer, and discussing life. The story focuses on two couples, Kate and Jake each work at the brewery, seem very compatible, are best friends because each already has a significant other. Jake is planning to eventually marry Jill, and Kate seems in love with Chris. When the four of them go away to a lake house on Lake Michigan for a weekend it seems that the guys are paired up with the wrong girls. But nothing sinister happens, it just opens eyes to other possibilities. Many who prefer action movies may not like this movie because not a lot happens, there are a number of conversations that go on a bit, but the script writing and the acting are first rate. It all comes over as very believable, that these could be real couples struggling with these real issues.Olivia Wilde is Kate, Jake Johnson is Luke, Anna Kendrick is Jill, and Ron Livingston in his typical understated style is Chris.

There are some movies out there which often create a cavernous divide among the audience. This is one of them. Not every painting appeals to every observer, and at times the beauty is often missed for many reasons. However in this film I think that beauty was indeed momentarily captured.I commend the Director/writer Joe Swanberg, and the lead performances by Jake and Olivia. Not only for their courage in creating this film and allowing so much of the script to be done ad lib (which I think is a big deal and hope catches on) but also because there was an incredible precision and tenderness in portraying what is often a very awkward fragility that comes about when bonding so closely with a friend of the opposite sex. A bond which can be so tragically beautiful, confusing, painful and frustrating all at the same time! There is one scene towards the end, where both of the main characters are sat awkwardly in silence eating lunch with one another after a seriously painful argument the previous evening in which the truth of the love between them cataclysmically failed to manifest physically. The funny thing was that the silence in that scene was deafening. Nothing was said or needed to be said, they're subtle interaction was enough.Sometimes the magic is in the detail and honesty! The cast were given the freedom to find and share it with us, and for that I am grateful and give this film a 10.

I usually write reviews of the movies I dislike as warnings to those about to view them but this time, I thought this small film should get some credit and hopefully encourage a few out there to see it. The writer/director has really nailed the complexities and emotional confusions that arise from relationships and how we really tip toe around what we really want or mean. Some people can express their needs and feelings more openly but it's always uncomfortable when the two aren't on the same wavelength or even know what they want. This is all expressed so well in this film. I read that some have said that nothing happens in this film. I'd say they weren't looking very deeply or are perhaps less in touch with themselves to have missed that there is so very much going on. Of course, if you are looking for the staged emotional rides of many rom-coms or perhaps want a riotous action comedy this is not for you. The acting is excellent all around and the director does an excellent job of piecing together the steps that lead the characters to their particular destinations, which don't always work out in storybook fashion. Sit back, relax and enjoy a film that encourages you to get into the character's heads and wonder how you would respond in their situations.

Neither one of the leads were likable. The two most likable characters to me were the two side characters. I could tell the movie was mostly improvised and the actors did not feel natural in that environment. There were times when it clicked, but not often. Some of the dialog was good in these moments, but it was never consistent. I remember laughing once during the whole movie and rolling my eyes for most of it. The two cast members, Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick, were not the main focus of the movie and the only reason I watched it. In general I do not like Jake Johnson and I have no opinion on Olivia Wilde. I guess they both did an OK job, but they were both so annoying in general
