Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
I like this moving because it's based on a true story. Also if you watch any interviews with the cast, you learn that they actually spent time with the real people to learn the story before they played the roles so that they had all the facts so that it was "real" instead of acting. The storyline was great and you could tell the actors really had a true love for horses. I totally recommend it. 5 stars!!
Something almost no one will ask themselves. But a former Scream star and a former Angel regular meet up here to go riding. Or something like that. It's a decent movie about people who struggle to make a living but still pursuing a dream. The acting is also more than decent, the story develops nicely. You may like it more or less, though I was surprised about the voting average. It's higher than I expected it to be. I guess stories about animals still are something people like to watch. Horses are a good match too, because of what they represent (human values too, being cast aside, no one believing in them anymore and so forth). If that floats your boat, go for it, if not, better not watch
Rarely do you get a film that can be appreciated by such a wide audience. Except for some barroom brawling at the movie's beginning, there is little reason "50 to 1" cannot be enjoyed by all ages, since there is no nudity, sex, or other than a fistfight, violence. The horse, "Mine That Bird" has an amusing personality, and the real life jockey, Calvin Borel is a joy to watch. I did not find the film to be overly dramatic, although cheering for the long shot in the big race is permitted. There is absolutely no gambling angle to this movie, other than a few bar bets, and the authentic feel and excitement of the Kentucky Derby is a highlight. Recommended for everyone who likes to root for the underdog. - MERK
I dig stories about underdogs, and this is certainly in that vein. It's a feel-good film fit for the whole family. It features a superb cast in Christian Kane, Skeet Ulrich, and William Devane. And Calvin Borel, the actual jockey who rode Mine That Bird in the winning Kentucky Derby steals the show as he plays himself.I had to wait a long time to see this film, because it was in limited release when it first came out, but it was worth the wait. The cast, crew, and everyone involved with the film put a lot of love into this film. Great movie for family night or if you've had a rotten day and just want to put a smile on your face.
