A cul-de-sac in an oppressive suburb becomes a literal dead end for wife and mother Karen Christianson when she is brutally murdered in her own home. In the wake of the event, Karen's teenage daughter Ellie begins to exhibit bizarre behaviors as she slowly acquires her mother's demeanor and mannerisms. Meanwhile, Karen's husband Ben nurtures a less-than-innocent interest in the family's sultry live-in nanny, Lena.

Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

7 out of 10 for the performances - while the characters were often cardboard cutouts, the actors and director *sold* those characters pretty well.I've seen other reviewers comment that the ending was unbelievable - I suggest that they re-watch the movie and look again. Obvious misdirection toward Ms. Stiles' character make the plot twist work, quite wickedly.(Here's the spoiler, for those who don't want to sit through this twice - Julia Stiles' character is not innocent of anything but matricide, but she didn't do that.) Some interesting characterizations, some new twists on the Electra plot, some great camera-work, and a topic that's not often seen on film - a daughter's heavy fixation on her father as a love interest. Not a film to write home about, but an enjoyable and surprising 90 minutes.

I loved the movie! Well, the message itself, is certainly upbeat. I can't really remember too many films with an ending such as this. Maybe The Bad Seed .... just spooky .... but, entertaining. There is so many interesting things going on in this film. The parents, the kids, the neighbors, etc. Obviously, somewhere along the line it seems that each and every person is put under a spell of some sort. Creepy. In reality, the way I view it, these are actors .... we are the audience, plain & simple. Guess hat? I just totally adored the gorgeous house! Who was the wonderful set-decorator? They should get an award! Those blue/violet drapes, remember those? What about the Fabe walls in all those different hues! AWESOME ... where can I purchase these panels is what I'd like to know? For those of you who have not seen this film, do so, & enjoy. Well, only if you can tolerate murder ... sorry. Can't wait until cable runs it again! Maybe I should just purchase it for my movie library ~ yeah, it's THAT good!

I loved Julia Stiles in "10 Things I Hate About You" and picked up this movie at the video store because she was in it. I found the characters in this film well developed and convincing...a little bit overly so. The subject matter and plot were very disturbing, yet engrossing...like watching a car accident.I found the film very well directed with good cinematography, well acted and hats off to Julia Stiles for pulling in a very convincing performance of a very disturbed teenage girl and the equally disturbed dysfunctional people in her life. The film was very engrossing, but just as equally unsettling. I would prefer to see all of the individuals involved in this project in something a little more uplifting before I could honestly recommend someone seeing this film to show how far they have progressed beyond this madness.

I was not aware that Julia Stiles would do something like this, although I praise her for her acting skills. It is a good thing that this film was made before she hit it big. Unfortunately they keep showing this terrible film on hbo and cinemax. God help all those who have seen this film and to aide them from vomitting.
