It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.

Good grief this was a slow movie and found myself having a hard time staying awake. After awhile I found myself walking to the kitchen and walking outside and flipping my steaks on the grill without pausing it..

If you are in the mood for a western, and you've been scrolling through your Netflix/Amazon/Roku for ten minutes and really don't want to watch "The Quick and the Dead" for the fourteenth time, this might be a worthy choice for you. It's watchable. It features pretty much what you'd find in any standard western, a big shootout, an independent widow who is losing her ranch, seedy politicians, and lots and lots of scenery. What it doesn't feature is Jim Beaver in a role that would have been picture perfect for him. Pullman did a reasonably decent job as a sidekick, but Pullman isn't a sidekick. Thirty years ago, Slim Pickens would have been cast in this role. There isn't a single memorable thing in this movie, and you'll likely never watch it a second time, but it's entertaining enough so you won't feel like you wasted your afternoon.

Had all the drama of the old TV westerns. If Hollywood or any of the Independents ever did a movie of the old Gunsmoke series like they've done with other TV series, I would say that Bill Pullman would make a great "Festus". That's what his Lefty Brown character reminded me of. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this movie in the theaters.

I like westerns. I even like BAD westerns. But I don't like dull westerns. And this one is dull. Little flashes of good can't outweight the droning going-nowhere-fast acting of Bill Pullman. The thing that surprises me is how in his varied performances, including this one, he always comes across like he's doing an L.A. dinner theater job of a guy acting like an actor. And yet people are wowed by his performance. I don't get it so I gave it a 4.
