Why so much hype?
Fresh and Exciting
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
If you like sexy violent gangster vampire comedies (and, c'mon now, who doesn't?), this is the movie for you. It's directed by John Landis in a mode similar to his earlier "American Werewolf in London." Anne Parillaud has winning charm as an Audrey Hepburn-Bela Lugosi hybrid (though neither of them did frontal nudity) and Anthony LaPaglia makes a fine unflappable detective. However, it's the late great character actor Robert Loggia who completely steals the film as an over-the-top Pittsburgh crime boss who discovers there are real advantages to being turned into a vampire. (If you remember him in nothing else, you'll recall Loggia as the toy company boss who dances with Tom Hanks in "Big.") It isn't intellectually deep or complicated, but it's plenty of fun. What's not to like?
THE GODFATHER meets Dracula! This film from director John Landis starts off promisingly: the first half of this film is great, with lots of in-jokes and overacting from Robert Loggia, playing a leading Mafioso. The idea of vampire mobsters is interesting, and played for laughs for the most part with strong effect. I didn't care much for the lead, Anne Parillaud, who begins the film naked and removes her clothes numerous times during the long running length, perhaps this is a desperate attention grabber. There's some kinky sex involving handcuffs and lots of references to over movies for horror fans, such as the films Dracula and THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS playing on TVs. It's entertaining, but doesn't go beyond face value. With this and AN American WEREWOLF IN London, it seems like Landis loves making easy viewing horror films for horror fans. Watch out for a hilarious scene where Loggia begins to dissolve in the sunlight, without realising what's happening. There's also a lot of swearing in this film which may be off-putting to some although it ties in with the gangster genre well enough. One thing this film really does have going for it are the special effects. The main ones are the glowing eyes, which are effectively shocking the first few times we see them. The best effect in the film is the disintegration of one of the vampires in the sunlight. His flesh burns apart, his arm comes off, and finally his neck bursts open spraying blood and his head dissolves. Quite shocking really, I was surprised this film got a 15 certificate rating here in Britain. Overall, the film feels a lot like a pre-runner to FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, and I'm surprised that nobody seems to remember it these days as it's one of the most fun vampire films of the 1990s.
I love this movie. Watched it over and over again on cable until I could get the DVD. It's fun although the first killing is little more blood than I am used to. I love some of the scenes that you know aren't possible if you live in Pittsburgh such as coming out of the Liberty Tubes and being in Monroeville. I know people that would love that commute. Or jumping off the Courthouse roof in downtown and ending up at St. Peter's on the Northside on their lawn. Robert Loggia is perfect as the Sallie and this is where I first fell in love Anthony LaPaglia. Best line is in the beginning where Marie looks at the newspaper and says she's going to "eat Italian tonight."
I hate seeing my cousins taken out by a vampire, but it sure makes for a good movie, especially when all your favorite gangster stars are there. There's Richie, Rocky, Carmine, & Paulie from the Sopranos (David Proval, Rocco Sisto, Tony Lip & Tony Sirico), Chazz Palminteri, Robert Loggia, Luis Guzmán, and Anthony LaPaglia in a cop role that he never imagined. There's even funny man Don Rickles as the mob lawyer. If you look close you can fine Yoda, Sam Raimi, and Dario Argento, too.Yes, it has porn stars like Teri Weigel, and a whole lot of babes that took it off to just appear in this film. But, the story was funny with the star of La Femme Nikita, Anne Parillaud, as the vampire that needs sex and blood to survive.Well worth the time invested.
