Don't Believe the Hype

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

At the start of the movie, I wasn't expecting to enjoy myself as it appeared to be another "loner" gets bullied and fights back scenario. There's also a lot of washed-out colours in the opening sequence where we see Lincoln getting bullied. I think this would have worked a lot better had Lincoln not been the stereotypical loner-come-nerd - your typical movie bully fodder. They had a chance to address the whole bullying issue but missed a common truth, anybody can be bullied. Also, the entire scene would have been more striking if you weren't expecting it; get rid of the diffused colours for normal light. This would have also added a deeper and more prophetic character later in the film. In fact, it's the stereotypes that let this film down the most, even though they are well acted by a decent cast.As I stated above, the director likes to use colour effects to create atmosphere, which on the most part works well, though he doesn't stick to his own formula for the whole film, which gives it a jagged feel at times. Also, some more imaginative camera shots wouldn't have gone amiss and would have helped in a couple of murder scenes, especially as the murders were carried out in a specific way.For me, the best selling point of the film is the kills. Just for the original way they are executed. The fact that Moira has to cut herself for those slashes to appear on her victims is a magnificent idea... particularly when those cuts cause her pain. This is a woman willing to suffer in death to give death. The other good detail of the film is when Lincoln realises what's happening to his bullies and tries to stop Moira... believing she's acting on his wishes... Though it's the story's climax where writer and director, Adam Egypt Mortimer, and writer, Brian DeLeeuw, make up for not addressing bullying correctly. The scene where Moira meets her nemesis is well written and acted with feeling by Sierra McCormick. You can feel Moira's anguish, fear, anger, and hate seeping out of her dead pores.As for the rest of the cast, they are okay, though are restricted by the writing, in general. This could have been a stronger and more relevant story had a few things been altered. I would have to warn people, though, that the scenes of self-harm are a little hard to watch at times. So I have to give respect to the director for this. It shouldn't be an easy thing to view.If you like vengeful ghost stories this is the film for you... or if you've been bullied it's nice to see the bullies get their comeuppance, even if it's fictional. For the gore-meisters out there it's worth a watch for the originality of the kills.

"Some kind of Hate" is a brutal but formulaic slasher with a couple of supernatural elements processed into the plot. It's not exactly original or particularly memorable, but it's nonetheless entertaining and surely delivers the goods in terms of violence and bloodshed. Lincoln is an introvert semi-emo teenager who gets bullied at home by his biker father as well as at school by the popular jocks. When Lincoln does finally dare to stand up for himself and sticks a fork into the eye of the bully, he's the one to gets punished and send to some sort of karma rehabilitation camp for juvenile delinquents. At the camp, however, the bullying against Lincoln's persona cheerfully continues, but when he hides from his tormentors in a basement, he accidentally summons the vengeful spirit of a girl named Moira who also got bullied at the camp and committed suicide. Moira promptly starts to annihilate Lincoln's bullies, but also the innocent kids and specifically the camp counselors with whom she has a personal score to settle. The premise of bullied high school kids avenging themselves with the help of the paranormal certainly isn't new, just think of such (semi-)classic titles like "Carrie", "Horror High" or "EvilSpeak", but not too many directors dare to tackle the subject of teenage suicide. Some of the characters' stories and testimonies are quite bleak and depressing, but luckily the emphasis primarily lies on the action. The first 2 or 3 kills are tame and take place mostly off- screen, but then all hell breaks loose and especially the last half hour is gore- soaked and vicious, notably because a few totally innocent and even sympathetic supportive characters are relentlessly butchered. The gore is always two for the price of one, because Moira's ghost cuts her own wrists and throat, and her victims simultaneously suffer the exact same wounds. The acting performances are good, with a few familiar faces (like Noah Segan and Andrew Bryniarski) and fresh new talents. Although fairly irrelevant, I must also state that two of the lead actresses are unbelievable gorgeous: Grace Phipps and Sierra McCormick.

The first 30 minutes are really solid, which is more like a psychological drama-thriller than anything else.But on the 30 minute mark that changes and it throws a supernatural twist on you which feels really random and took me out of the movie for a bit, but once I accepted that this is what the movie is like now I slowly but safely started getting into it again.And even though the movie most certainly is not without it's flaws I must say that this wasn't too bad of a watch, even though it's nothing spectacular but yeah I've seen hundreds of horrors that are a lot worse than this for sure... Seen hundreds that are better as well but that's beyond the point lol.And the acting is pretty good, and the gore is excellent, one complaint would be that occasionally the cast speak really low and it's hard to hear over the dark melodies being played in the background but overall not too shabby, better than I expected considering the rating of (currently) 4.6/10 for sure.5.5/10 from me, or rounded up to a 6.

When Lincoln accidentally summons Moira from the grave, he unleashes a vengeful force on a mission of revenge.........It's a sound idea, having a spirit, who went through great pain in life, coming back as a kind of unwanted guardian angel, killing people who may or may not do you harm, but then for only you to get the blame for the killing, and having you end up paying the ultimate sacrifice?Yes, I thought Candyman was a good film too, but this movie rips it off within an inch of its life, and whilst the spirit self harming herself to inflict injury on others is a pretty sound concept, the film itself doesn't offer anything new to the horror genre.We all know that Lincoln is a troubled teen, his dad played Leather-face in the remake of Texas Chainsaw, and he was Butterfinger in Hudson Hawk, so that's not a good staple for a role model for anyone.He also dyes his hair and stays away from everyone, so he's obviously a target for the dastardly bullies.It's been done a thousand times before, the revenge because of bullying film, and this is pretty much an ordeal to get through, despite the ridiculously short running time.Do yourself a favour, leave this one alone.
