Based on a true story, American Marine Jason Johnson (Goselaar) is sent on assignment to the Emirate of Bahrain. While there, he meets and falls in love with a spirited, lovely young woman, Meriam (Nichols), without realizing she is really a member of the Bahraini Royal Family. Meriam, who does not wish to consent to an arranged marriage, knows her love affair with Jason is dangerous, as he is a Mormon Christian and she a Muslim. Her parents would never consent to their match, and so Meriam and Jason race against time to escape Bahrain and make it to the United States, where they can marry. If Meriam is sent back, however, her life may be in jeopardy.

Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.

This is a horrible movie that shows that the director/producer/actors did not at all bother find out about a culture they are talking about. This movie is full of flaws and displays a totally wrong picture of the Arabic/Muslim culture. Even the infrastructure of Bahrain is shown as old/poor with camels and stuff.Any person who ever has seen any of the gulf countries (some of the richest countries in the world) will see that the infrastructure is in much better shape and way more modern that in the US or western Europe...And no attention is given to the fact that the adult marine is actually having his love-affair with a minor, which is not romantic, but disgusting. This movie really just makes me wanna puke my guts out!Disgusting, simplistic and manipulative!

*Don't read if you haven't seen the movie. It tells the general overview of what occurred.*I absolutely loved this movie. Their romance was a true "Romeo and Juliet" tale that Shakespeare himself would've probably applauded. The hardships, the trials, and the faith they had in each other was amazing. The fact that they overcame each issue placed against them shows that love does, indeed, conquer many things. Here's a young woman, willing to give up her family and her old life to begin writing a new one with the man she fell in love with. And here's a man who's willing to risk anything and everything to keep her with him, even if it meant defying the Marines. The only sad thing to this fairy tale romance, however, is the fact that not all fairy tales last an eternity.

This is a pleasant movie - and some would opine it's worth more than a '6' - but it's too hasty in many ways. Both 'Zack' and Nichols are fantastic, and especially Nichols brings a great warmth to the screen and her relationship there with MPG. (Perchance she will credit this to Cruise and her other LRH schoolmates? What a shame. And her name sounds like a spray you use to fight athlete's foot.) And it's well written and all around well directed and acted. But it's all too hasty. The girl has hardly met her Marine and she's totally in love. Were that to happen to me, I'd run for it. Sorry, but you'd have to be some kind of totally hard up Marine or something to get swooped up by it. No, things like this take a little more time than a phone call or two and a walk around the city dump. And then there's the other matter: this movie is probably all washed up as far as further market potential as the famous couple who were plastered all through the media have now gone their separate ways. After five years of marriage they applied for a divorce in the same town where they were once married and where they continued to live afterwards. After death threats, after the FBI warned them a Syrian, 500,000 dollars richer, was coming to the Strip to assassinate Meriam, after Jason tired of eking out an existence as a valet parker while Meriam disappeared night after night into the neon, Jason accepted Meriam's request for divorce and revealed that she'd been 'off the deep end' already for a year. The real life couple are cute but are they as cute as the on screen couple? N-o-t q-u-i- t-e.It could have been better - if time had been given to more character development. But these are made for television movies and they must play by their own rules. And it could have been an immense commercial success - more so than now - if only the couple had 'lived happily ever after'.It's not nice to second guess people or tell them to chill out - for people should always follow their hearts without question - but a bit more experience and savvy will never hurt either. Maybe the real life couple were too hasty?

I couldn't stop thinking all the time how mad she was not knowing what she was getting herself into. I am not surprised they are divorced now and I wonder what kind of a life does she have now? She just wanted to escape , but to escape what and what into? Otherwise the film was really interesting and eye opening and the acting was very good but from being a privileged princess to being a soldier's wife - what a jump. I must agree with her mother for wearing veils. I don't think I am old fashioned , just plain realistic. Perhaps if she were closer to her mother she would be able to understand her infatuation, because that's what it all was, infatuation with the unknown.
