Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
The Vendée wars mainly happened between 1793 and 1796 ,and by 1799,it was not very important when Bonaparte was about to come to power (Fall 1799) "Les Revoltés De Lomanach " was filmed in color, which was very rare in 1954 and the colors are still superb today. So is Dany Robin as the aristocratic "Juliet" in love with the general of the republican army, her "Romeo" .This is a very romantic movie, and the last picture is as tragic as Shakespeare's play!Too bad Dany Robin's co-star is so inexpressive (too bad they did not take Jean Marais ,who played opposite Robin three times) A story full of sound of fury,of treason ,of love and death ,a true costume melodrama during a civil war.Royalists vs republicans. Movies were conceived to bring joy and pleasure to the masses rather than ego trips for wanna-be academics. (my good friend Writers Reign, a French cinema connoisseur) This definition can be applied to Richard Pottier who never claimed to be an auteur as the fusty Cahiers Du Cinema understand it but made lots of enjoyable movies some perfectly acceptable ("Caroline Chérie" "La Ferme Aux Loups" ) one highly commendable ("Meurtres" ).He filmed the first version of "some like it hot" as "Fanfare D"Amour"'(1935) but his film has vanished into thin air.Like this ? try these ......."Caroline Chérie" Richard Pottier (1950) "Les Chouans" Henri Calef ,1946 "Chouans" Philippe De Broca ,1988
