Truly Dreadful Film
The acting in this movie is really good.
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
So three friends travel to Japan and go visit a temple that all the locals warn them against going near. Folks never learn do they, if the locals say stay the hell away then *Drumroll* stay the hell away.Character development was spot on from the outset so I expected something a bit better. Instead the movie plods along up until the half way point and then turns to crap.It all falls apart to such an extent that it becomes almost unwatchable. Our heroes arrive at the titular temple and well I'm sure you can pretty much work that one out for yourself. The end has an ambiguous "Twist" but that does nothing to save the movie from its fate as a mediocre mess. The Good:Beginning is interesting enoughThe Bad:Loses steam at around the half way markUltimately is just an all round messThings I Learnt From This Movie:If folks listened to the warnings of the locals these movies might actually be betterA better title for this movie would have been Friendzone, scary stuff
The worst part of this movie for me was the fact that there were some really dark scenes where I couldn't actually see what was happening. Other than that, I thought it was pretty good. I loved the Japanese landscapes and thought the acting was pretty good. I liked the twist with the little boy, too. I wish we knew what happened with Christopher, but I think that adds to the mystery of the movie. We know about as much as the investigators know by the end of the movie, giving it a perfect 'folklore' feel.
Honestly im utterly convinced my 8 year old daughter could offer a better effort than this pile of garbage ! ... how do these movies get funded and put together when they are simply awful ! ... doesn't anyone involved have the awareness of mind to think , wow we really are making the biggest pile of horse manure imaginable ! ... This turd of a film makes no sense and it thinks its being so clever with an utterly bizarre conclusion ! ... Hang you heads in shame all those involved in this shockingly bad effort !
Having watched this movie, I'm pretty sure they took the script for Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows and edited it to take place in Japan so the cast and crew could take a vacation. This movie replaced some of Book of Shadows annoying characters with padding shots of walking around Japan, so I'm on the fence for which is worse. They seriously had to pad this out to 1:17. I can't imagine what was cut out.
