A Disappointing Continuation
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
Tarantino made this flick as a homage to old low budget movies that used to be played in drive ins. It goes along with Rodriguez's Planet Terror in a concept called Grindhouse. Two low budget movies that DO NOT take themselves seriously and have one and only purpose. To look cheap, disgusting and funny as hell. They achieve that easily. They're both amazing, each one in a special way. If you go to movies without having a clue of what you're about to watch, do the art a favour and leave it alone.
Filmgoers who are familiar with Quentin Tarantino knows that movies are his passion and most probably his sole love. 'Death Proof' is the product of Tarantino's love for movies which surpasses his drive for creating his own brand of movies. This is the work of a director who wants to recreate a forgotten genre that appealed to him once. Therefore 'Death Proof' has more elements of the slasher genre than Tarantino's own unique style of film-making. All that being said, 'Death Proof' is definitely not one of his finest works. The action elements in the movie are so wide apart and is ridden with many dialogues that are stuffed with references of the movies that either 'Death Proof' has drawn inspiration from or plays into the theme of the story. While these dialogues between the characters of the movie about random things is one of Tarantino's signature elements, in 'Death Proof' they seem out of place and sometimes even hollow which is worsened by weak performances and lack of chemistry between some of the characters. Despite these disappointments, when there is action it is top-notch and deserves to be applauded for its technical proficiency. To sum it all up, 'Death Proof', while does not engage you consistently, gives you just enough to distinguish itself from many of the other passable movies.
Plot: Two separate sets of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to execute his murderous plans.I'll be honest, the first 47 minutes of this film were painful to watch to me, from the annoying characters, to the pacing, and the long takes of uninteresting conversations by these women in the first half. The one positive note I could say from those minutes was the performance of Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike who gives it his all and delivers a very good performance. This film really picks up when we're introduced to Zoë Bell, Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winsted, and Tracie Thoms who were more interesting characters than the ones in the beginning, even though Zoë Bell plays herself, she actually managed to surprise me by being very good in this film. The only character of the 4 that I wish was written better was Tracie Thoms mostly because of how Tarantino writes the character not necessarily the actress who did the best that she could do.Overall, this is a decent film from Tarantino, it would've been great if he focused more on the characters from the second half than the first half. If you're a Tarantino fan and you haven't seen it, check it out it's worth a watch.
Death Proof written and directed by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) and this movie could tell it had Quentin hand prints all over it but it just didn't feel like most of his other films. I still loved this film and thought it was great and better then some of his other films but Death Proof could have been better if I thought to myself this wasn't Quentin Tarantino. The story involves stuntman Mike played by Kurt Russel who was so entertaining to watch chase two set of girls in his car which I do wish they used it more because it was so unique and cool for a slasher movie. What else I loved about this movie was how it was shoot it was something I had thought about doing for a film myself and it felt like a true homage to 60's and 70's cinema. I would say this movie and this is probably with the work of Quentin Tarantino being able to make his characters extremely cool and bad ass he made the girls seem cool and bad ass in the film. I must mention the work of Greg Nicotero who made some really cool gore scenes but once again wished they used it a lot more. Which set of girls were the best well in my opinion the first set of girls they felt super seventies but the next set of girls meh I only cared for Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) who was great as always. Personally I can re watch this movie over and over and I myself think its underrated I would say don't watch this film if your a QT fan and watch it if your a fan of 60's and 70's cinema and hot women getting killed by Kurt Russel.
