what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

In this movie all of the illegals are good. Law enforcement is bad. American bourder policy is unjust and the USA treat illegals terribly unfairly. This film screams political agenda with its heavy-handed, one-sided message that buries a potentially fair story..

I ended up liking this more than I expected to. It sorta reminded me of "Traffic" with many separate stories and characters (revolving around immigration and the struggle to achieve legal status in L.A) that eventually all intersect. Some of the stories were more interesting than others but I would have to say Harrison Ford as the experienced Border Patrol agent, was my least favourite character from within a great cast. He is the ultimate "good guy" here but still just a grumpy old action hero (look at his face on the poster). All the stories were interesting though, the Mexican girls story was sad, Ray Liotta was uber sleazy and I always like Cliff Curtis. 09.13

Never before have I liked a movie so much that the critics have panned so consistently. A very world-weary Harrison Ford leads a talented ensemble cast exploring the experiences of undocumented immigrants in the USA and the immigration officers who deal with them. The focus here is not on the immigrants' flying under the radar (as with so many movies of this genre) but on their achieving naturalization, and what the various characters go through in pursuit of that goal is by turns tragic, brutal, provocative, and funny. One or two of the immigrant stories are clichéd, but each character is complex and fully developed. Also, immigrants from all over the world AND the immigration officers get equal screen time, and I found that both interesting and refreshing. The performances are all excellent and the writing and plotting are skillful and powerful, so I found a lot to like and not much to dislike. Eight stars.

It reminds me a lot on Crash, Babel and other similar-theme movies. Regardless, it still stands out as an accomplishment of its own for telling the same theme about immigration in US by bringing different perspectives and touching different buttons along the way. In fact it may have outperformed Crash ( which in my opinion is its over-dramatized counterpart) for being more transparent and somehow more realistic take on the same issue. Performances of some of the cast members were phenomenal. I am particularly impressed by Summer Bishil's performance, which was so powerful that only A-list actresses can pull off the same feat. She is amazing for someone of her age and she has great potential to be a great actress for the next generation.
