My Favorite Martian (1999)

Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.

I might be crazy but I did actually enjoy this film is it a perfect film? No but did I like it? YesI never seen the original show so I didn't have any high hopes or anything of that nature going into this film. I just remember seeing it on PPV for the first time with the family back in 1999 so It was a film I would just sit back relax and enjoy.Jeff Daniels, Christopher Lloyd,Daryl Hannah, Elizabeth Hurley Wallace Shawn star in this Family/comedy from Disney. Also features Wayne Knight in a Uncredited voice role as the voice of Zoot I actually enjoy the film for having some creative humor and the plot did hold my interest. I do think they could have done the film without a few of the "JOKES" they made in the film but the rest do workIf you don't take this movie seriously you might actually find it funny because I did and yes it's not a perfect movie but I have seen worse I give My Favorite Martian an 7 out of 10

My Favorite Martian (1999): Dir: Donald Petrie / Cast: Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Daniels, Elizabeth Hurley, Daryl Hannah, Wallace Shawn: Pathetic geek show based on a T.V. Show that starred Ray Walston as the martian. It regards a Martian's appeal or nature and why Jeff Daniels decides to help him. Christopher Lloyd plays the Martian who crash lands on earth and discovered by Daniels, a reporter who has just lost his job. Lloyd can shrink his space shuttle and has a zoot suit that has a life of its own. Daniels tries to help him repair his ship before it explodes. Lackluster directing by Donald Petrie who previously made The Associate. Special effects are cheesy and screenplay is dreadful. Lloyd is the one casting that appeals and he plays in a variation of his maddening Back to the Future role. We know he will repair his ship in time but no one could possibly fix the screenplay. Supporting roles are cardboard at best. Daniels plays the foil and unfortunately falls flat. Elizabeth Hurley as another reporter is a mere prop but thankfully she provides great eye candy. Daryl Hannah is wasted as Daniels's camerawoman / girlfriend. Wallace Shawn is also playing another role that comes across like he was up all night buzzed on coffee. With special effects that are about as good as a third grade art painting, this becomes yet another failed T.V. show to film that becomes one big brainless mess. Score: 1 / 10

I may have seen worse movies than this, but at present I am hard put to remember them. This movie contained bad acting, bad direction, a terrible script, and a complete lack of humour and soul. I can safely say I did not smile once during this movie, let alone laugh. The characters were not developed, manic running about was apparently a substitute for intelligent dialogue and intelligent jokes ... or in fact, any jokes at all. I certainly expected better of the stars, and I can only assume they must have been hard up for money to appear in this pathetic excuse for entertainment. To summarise, I would describe this movie as complete and utter excrement.

I'm not saying this movie stunk, but by the same token I'm not saying that it is good. As I was watching, I drew comparisons to another Christopher Lloyd film called "Back To The Future." In both films he played a character that is into fixing things as well as using vehicles as means of transportation between worlds. Also, it seemed that Jeff Daniels' character Tim O'Hara was an older version of Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly as they both played second fiddle to Christopher Lloyd. I found this film to be lacking in some areas such as laughter. Since this film is based on a television show, I'm sure that the director wanted to make the film as if it were an original. I thought that everything in this film was predictable; from its landing and the doctor who is after Uncle Martin to the traditional "happy" ending.With this being said, it was entertaining and enjoyable for younger audiences, but not for people around my age. I guess since this is meant for children it is not supposed to be such a thinking movie, but come on I would have appreciated it more if it gave the older audience something more to chew on as we sat through the film. This is one remake that could have been better if it were not made.
