Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

Me? Okay. Hiii, I'm tbills2 and this is my review for Legally Blonde and I'm a Cancer non-vegetarian. I have a bachelors degree in style design from CULA, and I was a Zeta Lambda New sweetie, president of my fraternity Delta New, and last year I was homecoming king. Oh! Two weeks ago I saw Ashton Kutcher at Fred Segal and I talked him out of buying this truly heinous angora sweater. Whoever said green was the new blue was seriously disturbed. Reese Witherspoon is seriously sooo cute as Elle Woods. I totally want to kiss her. Reese's unambiguously not a dumb blonde, see, she's got the looks and the smarts, and I would never dump her in a billion years since Reese is funner than anybody I can think of. I loove Holland Taylor and Jessica Cauffiel and Alanna Ubach are both so sweet! Bruiser is the best. Oh! Selma Blair is way prettier than Reese Witherspoon. Legally Blonde is so funny, and Elle Woods Harvard Video Essay is by far my favorite part, irrefutably.

OK - "Legally Blond" is light fare, but it's worth remembering how much this film owes to the 1973 masterpiece, "The Paper Chase". The writers of this film allude to it throughout.

Legally Blonde is a very fun movie! The lead is very good as Elle and there are a lot of laughs.I won't defend the sequel, which is awful, or the musical version I saw, which was worse than awful... but they don't detract from the original movie for me, which in my opinion is still a very fun and very funny film. Elle is hilarious and even though she is somehow and somewhat objectionable as a snobby diva of a pampered rich "girly girl", you just have to root for her as she becomes a better person and a better lawyer. It's no Citizen Kane or anything but if you're willing to just shut down your mind for a bit and laugh at some fun jokes, Legally Blonde is worth a watch or two.

At first glance one might think Elle Woods is the stereotypical shallow blonde Valley Girl; she Fashion merchandising student who is just waiting for her hunky boyfriend Warner to propose to her. Unfortunately just as she thinks he is going to propose he announces that their relationship is over… he intends to have a career in politics and believes his wife must come from East Coast old money not a girl like Elle. She is determined to prove that she can be serious too so enrols in Harvard Law School, where Warner is studying. She soon finds that life in Harvard is very different to life in LA; here she is very much the odd girl out. She also discovers that Warner has a new, 'more suitable' fiancée. After a shaky start she gets stuck in and impresses one of her lecturers, Prof Callahan, enough to be invited to help with the preparations for a murder trial. Now Elle is in her element as the client is a prominent west coast fitness instructor who Elle considers a role model. Unlike her professor Elle is convinced of the client's innocence and is determined to prove it… and the things that others thought made her shallow will be just what she needs for the case. This film is a lot of fun. This is largely down to Reese Witherspoon's performance as Elle; it refreshing to see that her character wasn't portrayed as a 'dumb blonde'; it is made clear early on that she is actually very clever, she is also a genuinely nice character who is happy to stand up for others. Other clichés are avoided too; for example Warner's new girlfriend isn't as bad as she first appears. The rest of the cast are pretty good too; notably Victor Garber as the professor who isn't as nice as he first appears and Luke Wilson as the lawyer Elle befriends. One or two clichés do unfortunately persist; the way Elle discovers that a character is gay because he is aware of what brand her designer shoes are is a bit too obvious. Overall I'd recommend this to anybody looking for something inoffensive and fun if a little light-weight.
