Just perfect...
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
I've never been a huge fan of Whoopi Goldberg but I really loved this movie! It's family friendly and a decent story about a woman (Whoopi) on the run from the mob with some of their stolen money or something. Anyway she hides out in a nunnery and poses as a nun even though she's a night club singer. She's a real fish out of water but ends up learning a lot from the real nuns, helps them change for the better as well with her fun singing and dancing (which ends up so beloved by the community the Pope comes to see their choir perform), and helps the community get safer and cleaner. Just an all around feel good movie with some really funny moments, a lot of heart, and even some great musical numbers!
This movie is absolutely brilliant! It's stuffed with great humor and a well-done plot, as well as original characters and acting that looks real. In some places, I could not stop laughing. The best part, in my opinion, was where the sisters were off to rescue the main character and needed a plane. The pilot wouldn't budge, so they started praying things like, "Father, do not blame this pilot for abandoning us in our hour of need," and "Please do not treat him with the same disregard that he's treated us," right in front of his face! I really liked the youngest nun, who was shy but sweet, along with the plump one, who was always cheerful. However, it's rated PG--parental guidance--for a reason. This movie is not like Cinderella 2015 or Finding Dory, which were also PG but still real friendly; you seriously need to have parental guidance. It's not just there being "dam*" and "hel*" in the movie, nor is it that there are guns. Some things get a little edgy in the direction of sex. Otherwise than the reasons it's rated PG, this movie is great and definitely a must-see!
Placed in witness protection after accidentally seeing her mobster boyfriend commit a heinous murder, a small-time Reno singer has trouble adjusting to her new identity as a nun in this Whoopi Goldberg comedy. There are some groan-inducing fish-out-of-water moments early on, such as Goldberg struggling to make it through grace, however, the film improves as she begins to embrace the convent life, finding a new passion in life when placed in charge of the convent's second-rate choir. Indeed, the film's best scenes involve the nuns singing religiously themed variations on popular rock tunes, including a clever rendition of the Mary Wells song 'My Guy'. It even reaches the point where the success of the choir is so interesting that the thugs tracking down Goldberg feel like a distraction when they suddenly reappear towards the end. The film is also let down by some simple stereotype supporting characters, with only Maggie Smith really standing out. Smith is actually funny than Goldberg, given all the best lines ("People want to kill you. Everyone who has met you I imagine."), however, she is ultimately merely a supporting player. Those interested in a comedy where Goldberg steals every scene she is in may be better served by 'Ghost', but this is a decent little film with even a solid message or two about believing everyone has the capacity for change.
I caught a glimpse of this again on TV a few days ago so I decided to throw a review on it.Whoppi Goldberg plays Dolores a nightclub singer who witnesssed a mob murder thanks to her mob boyfriend played by Harvey Kitnel and she has to leave the city. So she ends up telling the cops about it and one of the cops helps her escape by what else go undercover as a nun and hide out in a convent. So Dolores goes under the guise of St Mary Clarence and the convent is ran by Maggie Smith(Downton Abbey,Harry Potter franchise)and at first Smith doesn't take a shine to Goldberg but since the choir isn't doing that great, Goldberg decides to take matters into her own hands and decides to make the choir sing better as well Dolores used to be a nightclub singer. So will the choir improve with their singing which is all over the place?Bottom line this was a great film. I watched it so many times as a kid and it was funny in some parts. Also starring in this movie is Kathy Najmmi from Hocus Pocas and that hilarious flick Rat Race.Check it out and see what you think of it.
