By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

It's tough to watch something from outside and be able to tell how someone else is going to experience something that you yourself are very familiar with. Also I don't think Italian families are that different. But it's a nice touch to see the Greek community get some. Although some may be an understatement. The movie went big, leading independent movie grosses (maybe still the highest grossing independent movie in America? I haven't checked lately) when it was released.Does that make a good movie? Not necessarily, it actually brings out a lot of people who may watch this and look for things that went wrong. And this is so cliché that it is prone and susceptible to attacks. There are a couple of moments where I actually had to laugh, but that was not enough to actually enjoy the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, all the people involved seem nice and cool and everything, but I just didn't think they achieved everything that was possible (watch Highway to Hellas to see how it's really done).

This is not a real review, but watching this movie made me laugh sooo much. Reason: I got also married with a lady who is Greek Catholic. And a lot of the rituals and the cultural complexities in the movie were so much comparable with what I've been through. Mainly because the man gets married with a Greek woman. Anyway, we are married now for 16 years, and have 4 kids. There were scenes in this movie that made me find air again. For sure the author of the script or book must have been through the same situation, and wrote it down. Great movie to watch, timeless story, and so recognizable! Beautiful how different cultures create a tighter family and make people love each other more! Sven and Teodora-Flora

This is a very sweet movie. A nice feel good movie but I think it was nearly ruined by the parents of the groom. There acting is is like acting from a school play! It is such lazy story writing, the W.A.S.P. parents are cold, ignorant and frightened of other cultures! Yet their son is intelligent, very well educated and open-minded and it really seems like they have never even met. It is such a shame that in a movie about the inner workings of family that the movie makers got a bit bored and tired before managing to develop all of the main characters. I think the male lead's "likeability" and cuteness carry's this movie and of course the Greek Mammy! :) Saying that,it's very enjoyable very sweet and reminds me of movies in the 80's.

Wonderful film depicting strong family and ethnic ties. Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan are terrific as the parents of a 30 year old daughter, unmarried and looking as if she shall settle into a grim spinsterhood.Along comes an American teacher and love blossoms in record time and the two prepare for marriage. The film is a living testament to the fact then when you marry, you also marry the family. There is quite a lot of work to do to get the two very different families to get and like one another.Acceptance of others insofar as their culture and ethic makeup build the foundation for a very amusing, heartfelt and enjoyable watch.
