The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

This movie is very faithful to the manga and is one of the best adaptations out there. People may be put off by the cheap look of the film but the core story is great.+) Very violent fight scenes and over the top moments that you will remember for a long long time. These include Ricky gutting an overweight man with his bare fist, squeezing a man's hands so hard they crumple, slapping a man in the back of the head so hard his eyeball flies out, punching the top of a man's head off, punch a man on the side of the head so hard that the force causes the other side of his head to explode, and fighting against a man who suddenly transforms into an ugly "Hulk" like creature and killing him by grinding him into hamburger meat. Let's not forget the famous head smash scene and the "gut" choke scene as well.+)The core story is well written+)Fan is great as Ricky~The English dub is very bad and the effects are cheap

Riki Oh is a Hong Kong production based on a Japanese manga (comic book ). The Story Of Ricky is also very unique as I've seen hundreds of HK movies and I 've not seen anything else quite like it from there. Riki Oh takes place in a dystopian future where prisons are privatised , completely corrupt and its prisoners are brutalized by their sadistic wardens . In a very over the top comic book style The Story Of Ricky combines splatter with kung fu. Ricky has superhuman strength and deadly martial arts skills . He has become a hero to his fellow lnmates by standing up to these thugs. Rated Category III (X or NC 17 equivalent ) for violence alone , Ricky punches through walls as well as human flesh. Bodies explode , people get disemboweled, impaled, crushed and thrown in the meatgrinder. This is much more for gore hounds than your average kung fu fan, however as a fan of both gore /horror and action /martial arts I enjoy this film. Check out the bad guy from Daughter Of Darkness 1and2 as the evil warden.

"Lik Wong", a.k.a. "Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky" has to rate as one of the most entertaining adaptations ever made of a comic book. It sure as hell ain't for kids, though: this is unrelentingly gory stuff, with various unlucky characters pummelled, sliced and diced, exploded, and crushed. Handsome Siu-Wong Fan stars as Riki-Oh, a young man sent to prison in the "future", in this case the year 2001. Government functions have been privatized, and this particular prison system is corrupt to the core. Riki-Oh, who's endowed with superhuman strength, punches and kicks his way through the villains on his way to taking on the goofy Assistant Warden (Mei Sheng Fan), who with his artificial eye and hook hand wouldn't be out of place in a James Bond film, and the all-powerful Warden Sugiyama (Ka-Kui Ho). Riki-Ohs' fellow prisoners come to look up to him as he does his damage. The tone in this thing is completely on the tongue-in-cheek side; sometimes the makeup effects are obviously fake, but that only adds to the insane charm. People who watch films for gore will be more than satisfied by what they see here. With the exception of the stoic Siu-Wong Fan and a few others, the performances tend to be broad. Riki-Ohs' enemies are a colourful bunch, and in one inspired touch, one of them, a male character by the name of Huang Chuan, is actually played by a woman, Yukari Oshima. Directed with great flair by Ngai Choi Lam, this has an excellent forward momentum and waits until well into the story to give us Riki-Ohs' full back story, when his girlfriend (the incredibly gorgeous Gloria Yip) fatefully witnessed a drug deal going down. Philip Kwok, who went on to work on such productions as John Woos' "Hard Boiled" and the Bond franchise entry "Tomorrow Never Dies", is the stunt coordinator and does a superb job. All in all, this is irresistible pulp fiction that gets down to business fairly quickly and delivers non-stop gut busting violent entertainment, working its way towards a pull-out-all-the-stops finale set in a kitchen. If you're a lover of martial arts cinema and have a taste for excess, you can be assured that "Lik Wong" delivers the goods. Eight out of 10.

Both Cinema Snob & Diamanda Hagen have review this movie, Hagen is the one that made me want to see the whole thing. You can't get it on DVD, or even buy a legal in-print copy, so don't be afraid to watch it online if you can't find a secondhand VHS.This is a contender for king of "so bad it's good." The special effects are over-the-top, the dubbing is hilariously bad, & I challenge you to find an actually comedy funnier than this action movie. You get the feeling that the movie is not taking itself seriously, but the actors play it straight. This is a great movie for an up-all-night party or a drinking game. Get a VHS copy & spread the gory bloody love.
