Highly Overrated But Still Good
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
One of those movie experiences that is so good it makes you realize you've been grading everything else on a curve.
It's not a masterpiece of cinema, but it's quite a solid thriller, with a touch of horror. And it isn't as predictable as it may seem to you at the beginning. For those who do not require the film to be superior (often unwatchable) art, but want to have fun with a solid thriller, warm recommendation.7,5/10
I really enjoyed this movie. I also did not predict this movie at all. I can normally predict a movie and say, "yep, this is going to happen" but with this movie what I thought wasn't correct and hence why it was a great movie. Obviously if you read the spoilers, you won't be shocked and it will take away from this movie. I won't give any spoilers, but it is definitely worth watching.I gave it a 8 because it lacked character development and it is never really explains why the town people really hate Ryan, considering he moved away when he was 7 and returned only after his parents were murdered by his sister.
Why House at the End of the Street is labeled under horror at all is beyond me. Looking for horror I decided to try this out. If I'd known I was watching just a thriller I wouldn't have felt unnecessary disappointment.Jennifer Lawrence and Max Thieriot(Bates Motel) do a fine job in their performances even though you can tell they haven't quite earned their acting chops yet. The story moves pretty fast with not much low time but with no passion from the director the film feels copy and pasted mostly. My biggest gripe would have to be that the most intriguing information we learn is saved for what feels like an after thought. It's very out of place. If you like thrillers and don't come in with high expectations you'll have a good time.
I'm not really a fan of horror films but I watched this anyway as I was round a friends house. I was pleased to find out that in the end it was more of a mystery/thriller rather than a horror. There was only really one scene that made me jump and that wasn't so bad. It's quite an atmospheric film with good suspense build up music throughout. The acting was OK overall, Jennifer Lawrence and Max Thieriot were both very good though. They had pretty good chemistry at the beginning and also done the more shocking scenes quite well. There are some pretty grim scenes but nothing too graphic, its mostly just atmospheric with a good twist towards the end. Nothing original but it was a decent enough movie to watch.7/10.
