Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

In the Stone Age, the strong caveman Tonda (John Matuszak) is the leader of a hostile tribe and the outcast Atouk (Ringo Starr) feels unrequited desire for Tonda's mate Lana (Barbara Bach). One day, Atouk is walking with his best friend Lar (Dennis Quaid) and they meet the cavewoman Tala (Shelley Long). They save her blind father Gog (Jack Gilford) from a tar pit and Tala fells unrequited affection for Atouk. Soon the smart Atouk becomes the leader of the misfit tribe and dispute the leadership of the whole clan and Lana with Tonda. But in the end, the leader needs a worthwhile mate."Caveman" is a hilarious silliness and is among the silliest movies ever made. But is funny and makes laugh a lot with the gags. The movie has its own language that is very easy to translate and understand the meaning of the words. Shelley Long is very beautiful and this movie introduced Ringo Starr to Barbara Bach that married each other in the end of the release year (1981). In the end, it is worthwhile watching this entertaining comedy. My vote is six.Title (Brazil): "Caveman – O Homem das Cavernas" ("Caveman – The Caveman")

Atouk and Lar meet and join up with other outcasts to form their own tribe, after being banished from their own. The new tribe includes a blind man, a gay couple, a dwarf, and other oddball outcasts rejected by other tribes. But Atouk still longs to be with Lana, the beautiful mate of Tonda, the leader who kicked him out of his tribe......How best to describe this movie? Strange would be a good way to put it, and also, for reasons beyond me, its actually very watchable, and quite funny in places. To put the film across to someone, they would balk at the idea of the film, The drummer from The Beatles, who wasn't the best drummer in the band, starring in a movie about Cavemen, that doesn't have hardly any comprehensible dialogue.I only saw he film, because I thought we would be in Battlefield Earth/Starcrash territory, but don't let the synopsis deter you, the film is endearing, and because of the lack of spoken English, Starr turns in a good performance. The movie is visually stunning, and the stop motion looks so bad, its actually quite good, especially the stop motion Ringo during the final set piece.Ably supported by Long, Quaid, and Bach, Caveman is one of those throwaway movies that is fun while it lasts, but instantly forgettable, and a touch homophobic...

I have not seen the movies since the 80's so for all I know if I were to watch it now I would hate it or find it completely unfunny. However, I have not seen this movie since I was a kid and as a kid I enjoyed the movie a lot. It used to come on all the time on HBO back in the day, but it seems one of those films that has completely faded from most people's memories. The film is basically a comedy about cavemen most likely making fun of the many cave adventures that were put out in the 60's and 70's. It has Ringo Starr as a caveman who is part of a tribe that treats him very badly along with kicking out the injured. His character yearns for the tribal leader's girl and who wouldn't as she is played by Barbara Bach who for my money is one of the most attractive Bond girls playing XXX in "The Spy Who Loved Me". This misfit eventually gets thrown out of his tribe, but ends up making his own clan full of a motley crew of misfits. The film might have been better had they gotten a better lead than Ringo, not that he is bad, but he is not really acting material. Granted one can say you did not really need to be all that much of an actor for this film. This movies is also Shelly Long's first feature film as her film career has to be one of the most bizarre assortment of movies ever. There are monsters in this one, looking just a bit better here than those found on the kid's show "Land of the Lost". I particularly liked the mosquito scene as a kid. So while I can not say for sure if I would like it now, I did find it pretty good as a child.

Just not all that funny for most of the film, but it tickles some people's funny bones, and there's no point in arguing with that. One odd thing that I noticed. Predictably, we're supposed to sympathize with the small nebbishy caveman Atouk (Ringo Starr) in his rivalry with big bullying caveman Tonda (John Matuszak). Actually, as the film went on, I found myself having more and more sympathy for Tonda, who doesn't really seem like a worse guy than Atouk. He's just taking predictable advantage of his size and strength. And I say this as more of an Atouk type myself. There are a few funny moments, which I won't spoil by describing them ahead of time, but there aren't enough to carry the movie.IMHO obviously.
