Highly Overrated But Still Good
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Movies based on true crimes quite often tend to be exploitive and lurid. We can watch all kinds of imaginary horrors, switch the TV-set off and go to sleep. But when the story happens to be a real tragedy and told in such painstaking detail, it brings us much closer to the darkness of life than we wish to be. Australian movie " In Her Skin " is a powerful and precise storytelling. It almost feels like watching the vivisection of both body and mind, of victim and killer alike. Unwanted, unloved child and cherished, beautiful princess cross paths and somehow that simple, everyday occurrence alters the outcome of everything. This is a difficult film to watch, even if it doesn't try the cheap manipulation or aims for righteous indignation. It just slowly grabs you in it's twisted, heartbreaking spider web and makes you a witness to violence you dearly hoped never to be part off. But it is too late for that, you were.
I was waiting for a long time coz of the title (in her skin). But after seen this impressive movie I can tell you it was not so disgusting however the exploit was gruesome to see. I love drama and some how I love it. If you love this movie you also have to watch Changeling with the same impact. The movie is entertaining and the height is not after one hour. You can see this movie in two parts. First hour the missing girl, the girl who hate herself so much and the second part the searching of the missing girl. Strong cast from Ruth Bradley. Sam Neill is not the main person in this movie but his cast is also good. Bit strange cover. Btw good music. This movie is also good for psychologists. Nobody is perfect!
Interesting true crime study here which focuses instead on the perpetrator instead of the true crime "whodunit" aspect, kudos to the writer and director for approaching it this way.Ruth Bradley as Caroline Reid, a true crime story wherein a girl is kidnapped and her family frantically searches for her. Miranda Otto and Guy Pearce are the parents, rather standard issue, though there is a good scene where the father breaks down, sensing the outcome of what has happened to his daughter. The soundtrack throughout is very good, and was written about this particular case.Sam Neill as Caroline's father is believable. A businessman worried about appearances, we never see her mother but can only imagine the alienation and absence. Neill is good as narcissistic, critiquing Caroline's "disgusting" apartment and that if she only cleaned it up and lost a few pounds she would feel better. She is in the throes of a major suicidal depression, yet all Dad notices is the dirty laundry. In 2013 in real life Caroline Reid will be released from prison. What motivated her?. Why couldn't she get psychological help? What was her relationship with her father?. All these questions may stay unanswered...If you like this film theme you may also like "The Bell Jar" (original with Marilyn Hassett and Brabara Barrie circa 1979).
I absolutely loved this film. I was totally gripped start to finish. The mix of surreal camera work and character chapters made the horrific subject matter all then more intense and difficult to deal with, as it should be. The story itself suited the surreal elements that reflected the characters states of mind. All of these mixed elements create a bizarre world inside a real one, which enables the viewer to, to some extent, empathize and imagine the kind of horrors that the people these characters are based on must gone through.Ruth Bradley, who plays Caroline is absolutely astonishing. She switches between creating terror or sympathy and is nothing short of completely convincing.
