Legend has it that the human race is not the only dominant civilization living on Earth. Two other races exist in this world: the Makai (a demon race) and the Jujinkai (a half-man, half-beast race). Once every 3,000 years, a supreme being known as the "Choujin" (Overfiend) will emerge and bring balance to all three realms on Earth. In present-day Japan, after 300 years of endless searching, a Jujinkai named Amano Jyaku has discovered the presence of the Choujin inside high school slacker Tatsuo Nagumo. But now, Amano, along with his sister Megumi and their sidekick Kuroko must protect Nagumo and his new girlfriend Akemi Ito from the Makai, who believe that Nagumo is not the Choujin, but an evil entity bent on destroying all living beings on Earth. Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend was originally released as a 3 episode OVA series from January 21, 1987 to April 10, 1989 but was later re-release as a compilation film on March 18, 1989.

It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Most people watched this because of the infamous tentacle rape. I however did not. I remember seeing the DVD cover as a kid and the image of a large monster standing over a city stuck in my mind. I am also interested in stories that blend fantasy (specifically dark fantasy) and horror. The story is that there a three realms: the demon realm (those who won't become human), the beast realm (the super-humans) and the human realm. In the demon realm, there is a legend that every three thousand years that a god known as the Overfiend is reborn in the human realm to unite the three realms to create an eternal kingdom. The demons are determined to stop this from happening by destroying the Overfiend where as the beasts wish for the Overfiend to create the new eternal kingdom. SKIP PARAGRAPH TO AVOID SPOILERS: In the end it is revealed that the Overfiend did create the world. Not only that, but if the Overfiend is not satisfied with its creation, it sends a demon of destruction to destroy the three realms so it can start again from scratch. I personally found this interesting as it raises a dilemma: stop the Overfiend or allow the world's destruction to make way for a utopia. It also brings up issues like how long has the Overfiend created worlds only to destroy them? It also shows that the demons that were presented as the antagonists at first were trying to save the realms from destruction. Now the major problem: it's hentai. I have no problem with pornography but I feel it got in the way of the story. It seemed to me the anime was more concerned with being as sexually explicit as possible rather than developing the world and its characters. I understand that sex was actually interwoven with the plot but at times it was felt excessive. I know some will disagree but I don't think that showing penetration actually added anything apart from shock value and attention. The tentacle rape and all the rape scenes made me feel uncomfortable. That was probably what they were aiming for but it makes me wonder if anyone gets aroused by it.I have seen both the edited English language version and the uncensored Japanese version, I recommend the Japanese version (if you can see it) as the story is explained more clearly, the subtitles are more accurate to the original dialogue and make more sense than the English dub. And if hentai is your thing that is another reason to recommend this version. SPOILERS SKIP PARAGRAPH IF YOU WISH TO AVOID THEM: In the Japanese version characters are more fleshed out. A little bit more, this hentai after all. For example in a scene Niki rapes Akemi, he shows remotes for his actions which is cut out of the English dub. There is also a scene in the uncut version that shows how Niki found out that he needed Nagumo's semen and blood to become stronger. In the English dub he just shows up one scene knowing this. Scenes that add to the story are integrated in the sex scenes which is why the English dub makes less sense as these scenes were cut due to explicit sex, such as the scene where a Niki woman forces her foot into his mouth. It is shown in the uncut version the women were having an orgy and teasing him after his advances went unnoticed by Akemi. Overall, this a pretty decent anime, not the best that I've seen. But then again if you are looking for a good hentai with an actual plot then I would recommend seeking out the uncut Japanese version and skipping the English dub. 6/10.

The story reminded me of a later film that I saw before this one called "Nightmare Campus" in the United States. It also lived up to its hype in the violence department, but it really lacked in the sex department. Which being the pervert I am was rather disappointing. Seems the version I got was cut to shreds and most of the best sex scenes were cut down to little more than what you would find in your typical Hollywood movie, a thirty second clip that does not really go anywhere. I do not understand why they do not sell this movie uncut, they sell so many other adult anime movies uncut that it makes little sense that the grandfather of them all, I am thinking the first one can only be found in cut form. Well that knocked it down a point or two I really wanted to see the movie in all its glory. Still, it had a somewhat interesting story till near the end where it just went on a bit to long after the one dude went crazy and the world was pretty much in danger. Still, it had some good scenes of demons and such fighting here and there during the trip and the disappointing short sex scenes. The story of the strange being that is destined to unite the three worlds (human, beast, demons) is rather good, but like I said it reminded me a lot of the "Nightmare Campus" movie. The sex in that one was a bit obscured too, and I am betting I watched a cut version of that film as well. The animation is rather good, especially for the time as it is a notch above a couple of other movies during that period though I would still give the edge to "Akira" as far as looks of the film goes. I would also say that one had the better plot too as I did not even care that it had no sex.

3 worlds must unite but will it be a good thing ?, every 3000 years a demon is found inhibiting a human , its up to man-beasts (half human ) to find this demon know en as the chojin , this chojin is very powerful the man beasts consist of ammino and megumi and a small little black character of another species , also there is an unpopular kid named Nicky who love'mekami but she loves the main guy ... ...... now what do i think?? gory and sexual hell yeah!! watch if you love twisted but quality movies some may be repulsed by the blood and boobs , not me! i think its got a good story also check out the equally inane 3quals!! i think this movie rules the animation is great because its from the 80's ....

"Urotsukidoji - Legend of the Overfiend" is quite groundbreaking in its delivery of content. As an animated manga production, the film is a mix of teen angst, humour, horror and sexual scenes. At times, the film is visually breathtaking - although I found the standard of animation occasionally slipped, unlike the always-consistent "Akira".The plot of "Urotsukidoji" is difficult to explain in brief but the basic premise is that Demons have started to invade the Earth causing havoc in the form of depraved attacks. Two characters from the Beast World have come to try and put things right by finding The Overfiend. Hopefully, by locating The Overfiend, peace may be found. Failure will mean the end of the Earth....The "Urotsukidoji" ("Wandering Kid") series are love-'em or hate-'em affairs. They contain excessive sex and violence (and usually violent sex) and may offend viewers. Certainly, these animated movies are a far cry from political correctness! The style of manga featured in this production is known as Hentai - this loosely translated is cartoon pornography. As a result, there are a number of sexual scenes which appear in the film and most of the characters involved meet a sticky end (and not the usual kind!).To see the film in its uncut glory, you need to catch the now deleted "Urotsukidoji: Perfect Collection" DVD set. This contains the first movie in its complete form and with subtitles rather than horrible dubbing. Contained within the 2 disc set is also the rather good sequel, the tastefully named "Legend of the Demon Womb".If you like your horror adventurous, bloody and taboo-breaking, "Urotsukidoji" is the animated feature for you!
