Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Initially I must admit that the idea of killer mermaids seems a bit interesting, especially if you are familiar with the myth about the nymphs and sirens. I like that myth and concept, so of course this movie had some appeal to me. However, it was with absolutely no expectations to the movie that I sat down to watch it.Now, the movie starts out rather alright with some deaths very early on, but leaves you with a question about why this would be about mermaids. Then the movie settles into a little bit too comfortable pace in itself, it would seem, and it loses momentum and becomes somewhat mundane and mediocre. The movie does pick up some pace again once the people get out to the Island, but even then it is still rather slow paced and bland.Director Milan Todorovic spend a little bit too much time on filming and showing rather pointless stuff, such as an extended dance scene for example, which served no purpose for the movie, and could essentially have been cut down tremendously in time and still accomplish the exact same thing.I wasn't familiar with anyone one the cast list, and I do like watching new actors and actresses on the screen, because there is no association to them to previously portrayed characters and roles. People in this movie were actually doing quite good jobs with their characters and roles. So thumbs up on that accomplishment.I have seen three different titles for this very same movie, "Mamula", "Nymph" and "Killer Mermaids", depending on where in the world you find the movie. The special effects in the movie were actually quite alright, although the movie was fairly sparse in displaying and making use of special effects. For better or worse, that is a matter of personal preference, of course."Mamula" turned out to be something quite different than what I had anticipated after having read the synopsis for the movie. I can't say that I was positively surprised with the outcome of the movie, because it was just a very bland and mediocre foray into the horror genre. And it was very wrongly advertised, because the mermaid was hardly a focal point to the story and wasn't even present for most of the movie. In fact the movie would be better advertised with a title like "Fisherman's Frenzy", as most of the killing was done by that guy.All in all, then "Mamula" was somewhat of a disappointment, and it turned out to be a mediocre movie, even for a horror movie.

For a movie called "Killer Mermaid" this has surprisingly very little mermaid action in it, it takes an hour before the promised killer mermaid action actually starts (unless you count the beginning teaser). In the first 30 minutes or so it still kept my interest a bit, a lot having to do with the beautiful Serbia Monetenegro landscape that I haven't really seen in a movie before. The characters also feels a little more three-dimensional than the usual 2d stereotypes that cheap creature features like this usually offers. Not that any of the characters are all that interesting tho and once the action does start in the second half the clichés starts piling up.The acting is okay although the accents get a little distracting from time to time and make the dialog sound unnatural for most of the cast. It's not the worst movie I've seen or anything but it's not particularly good either, if you're looking for a mermaid horror movie I suggest SHE CREATURE (2001) instead.

Worst then Sharknado and is not the "best" worst like... is that awful. Such as it is, the story is a classic, school development plot filled properly announced crafts and discharging, what many would call the existing cliché whereby. This determination can be made only if the cliché is understood as something most universal and also the best that has survived in two thousand and seven hundred years of dramatic tradition, and if you repeat the formula is understood as part of the entertainment. The film and other elements used genre conventions and pop-cultural references, especially when tension during chase solves the camera in motion, and dreadful ambiance far totals and nautical passages. An incredibly pathetic achievement.

This little film from Serbia directed by Milan Todorovic is based on a story by Marko Backovic and transformed into a screenplay by Barry Keating and Milan Konjevic. It will satisfy the current voracious appetite for horror stories that serve substantial amounts of gore to audiences who love that sort of thing. With an unknown cast the director relies on the presence of Franco Nero to bring a bit of credibility to an otherwise incredulous story. Two American girls travel to Montenegro on vacation to visit an old friend, playboy Alex who unbeknownst to the girls is now engaged. They decide to venture to Mamula, a former prison island and Nazi concentration camp that houses a horrendous evil. During their exploration of the fortress they discover that they are not alone: a sinister fisherman named Niko (Franco Nero) is seen disposing of human remains in a well and everyone realizes they are in mortal danger. Someone else is on the island with them and he will stop at nothing to protect it's secrets. There is a darkness hidden beneath the island and the terror has just begun – the killer mermaid. As if there weren't enough of this type of tale on television for free they continue to light up the marquee. As long as there is an audience there will be more. In Serbian and English with subtitles. Grady Harp, September 14
