The Age of Commercialism
How sad is this?
A Masterpiece!
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
This movie should be required viewing for anyone who thinks they want to move to Florida and live. This represents 70% of the population there. There has never been a larger group of worthless low-life no-good white trash scumbags assembled in one geographical area of the U.S. This movie shows the real picture of the state. Tourists see the beautiful beaches and amusement parks but this is what Florida really is away from the attractions.
I wanted to review this movie because it was such a nice surprise to enjoy it after I had avoided seeing it due to the low rating here. This is a really original movie, with solid performances by the lead actors. From the IMDb summary you know the basis of the film, whats original about it is it does not focus overly on the negative - depressing themes etc. Due to the characters being in a low income, 'poor' demographic of society, so many movies are made with a view of looking down, pity, there is something wrong and these people need to change. This film is very real but not negative or depressing. It shows that just because a couple is not living the American dream, it does not mean their lives don't include fun, love, laughter etc regularly. There was no bullshit in this movie, no 'Hollywoodness'. And I liked it. Its so good Matt Damon and Naomi Watts take on films like this.I'd rate it a 7, but give it an 8 here to boost the rating!
It's hard to really distinguish the very good indie flicks from the not-so-very-good ones, and that's because not many people see many of them, not many notices, not many reviews out there for others to see and make a judgment as to if they want to watch a certain flick because of reviews (or not). In that case, this film isn't bad, but I may not totally recommend it either. The performances are solid but nothing extraordinary, certainly not acting that would stand as some of the best of the year. Watts has done this certain thing before and better, and she has some iffy moments here. Matt Dillon may actually be stronger and more consistent, but yeah, not much stretch as an actor the role called for. It's not really "bad" though.
6.25 of 10. A film that needs to be watched in its entirety to truly appreciate. A complex story set in the South, Florida in particular, with the type of people once viewed as trailer trash rednecks. It starts out as a handicap man's fantasy, then starts to shift, with hints along the way that things aren't as nice as they look. It's not the happy world of Coke and donuts for breakfast and dinner, the peanut butter might not be fresh, and the adopted parents may not be in it for the sake of loving children. It's things like the product placement in the film that require the complete story of the film to be put in proper perspective. The film would have benefited from a bit more context, but is definitely worth seeing.
