Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.

This haunting movie is about the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The film takes place at a UN school with Sir John Hurt as Father Christopher and Hugh Dancy, a British teacher. In only a few days, 2,500 refugees stayed at the school rather than be slaughtered by machete outside the gates. The film shows the horrors of dead bodies laying on the streets. Hurt is brilliant in his role. When he explains that he has found his soul here, it was heartbreaking. You knew Christopher would stay behind. When the father pleaded to be killed by guns than machetes, it was harrowing. The story of the genocide in Rwanda should be told here. The film doesn't shy away from accurately reporting the events. The film was done on location in Rwanda.

while Hotel Rwanda is more toned down and suitable for younger audiences this is in your face with the violence it is clear and on screen this doesn't take sides on any it shows everyones motive and i liked the UN captain with a rip between his humanity and his orders the violence at times is very disturbing and it doesn't find the fact that these people where killed in there own homes and on the street it deserves more praise than Hotel Rwanda which is good in its own way but shows what happened to someone with money this shows what happened to the poor who couldn't buy there way out the end scene was disturbing and it points out not what the solders did who where under orders but shows what there commanders did in Hotel Rwanda when we watched it in class people found it weird why they couldn't shoot as it didn't explain however in this it tells you why they couldn't and says why it couldn't and the extras gives extra info about it and this film has John Hurt at his best a must see for everyone

Serge Farnel made a very precise critics of this film in the revue "The Rwandese night" (www.lanuitrwandaise.net)A critics which shows how France was behind all the situation undergone by the United Nations in Rwanda. The UN soldiers were in a dangerous situation while the french soldiers were warmly welcomed by the genocide forces. The day before, ten UN soldiers had been killed by the genocide forces. That is why the UN soldiers decided to protect their own lives by driving behind the french trucks.By doing so, they gave up the Tutsi which is unforgivable of course. But we must keep in mind that the french soldiers organized this situation.

The film brings home the self created impotence of the international community. Dogs are shot by soldiers to prevent them eating the bodies of people they have to stand by and watch being slaughtered. The true facts (although the characters are fictional) of the situation are as awful as they are bizarre. Portraying this on screen along with the humanity in the face of death was done superbly and in a very direct human way.The illustration of how situations such as this gather and how people, once considered friends, can be so corrupted is achieved with a deft hand.
