It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

Been a while since I saw this one, but man, Belial's fits of rage and...well, simply dismay and throwing of tantrums, will forever be scared into my memory. Kinda a neat idea for a movie, guy's conjoined twin who, by medical standards really should not even be able to survive in his state, is alive and well, able to speak telepathically to his seemingly normal, yet mentally unstable brother? The movie has some pretty comedic parts, and it moves at a decent pace, not dragging on like many other movies of its time. It's something the squeamish shouldn't watch though, definitely, it sure can be gross at times too.

"Basket Case" is a great, low-budget shlock horror/comedy from the early 80's. It involves two brothers and their plot to get revenge. "Basket Case" has an appealing low-budget feel to it, and Kevin Van Hentenryck is very likable as Duane. Belial, the deformed twin, is an oddly sympathetic character. Yes, the film contains some scenes that many will find sick and depraved, but it also contains some truly haunting images. Actually, this movie is about the love between two brothers and the jealousy / anger that develops when one of them falls in love. There is a certain warmth beneath all that goo! Along the way, we are treated to many scenes of mutilation and depravity, as only Frank Henenlotter can deliver. This movie does supply emotion, and is very touching at the end. Gus Russo supplies the soundtrack for this movie. When you see the end of "Basket Case", Gus Russo's music blends in beautifully with the scene and makes this scene very sad. Oh, and the setting is worth the watch as well when NYC was gritty and infested with drugs and prostitutes. However, it is an interesting idea. There were moments in this movie that were so funny (that I don't think were meant to be). Some of the characters are over the top. There were some scenes (particularly the really bad stop-animation scenes) that made me wince in their low quality. One thing is for certain though - this is a one-of-a-kind horror experience. I would say that any horror fan should have this in their collection, if you don't already.Overall rating: 7 out of 10.

Basket Case is awful. Fact. However, it's also brilliantly awful! Yes, the acting is pretty bad, the special effects really aren't that special and there are so many times where you have to suspend your disbelief, you'll basically be sitting there for ninety minutes with your jaw on the floor. But, it's sooooo much fun (if you like this kind of thing). It's about a mild-mannered young man who carries a mysterious basket around New York with him. The basket contains his miniature deformed psychotic Siamese twin, who had been forcibly separated from him at birth. Now he, and his squashed accomplice, hunt down the doctors who separated them.To properly enjoy Basket Case you need to be a fan of bad movies. If you know what I'm on about, give Basket Case a try. If you don't, you'll probably hate it. These sorts of 'so bad they're good' films are normally made in the seventies or eighties and normally horror. They normally have stupid characters and over-the-top gore. Basket Case ticks all these boxes. To enjoy Basket Case, remove your brain (and place it somewhere safe - you don't want a stupid film like this permanently lowering your I.Q.), slouch on a sofa, put a kind of 'glazed' expression on your face, sit back and revel in the beautiful daftness of it all (and if you really like it, then watch Basket Case 2 and 3).

There is a young man, 'Dwayne Smith', wandering the streets of NYC with a mysterious basket. He was born as a conjoined twin; his mother died giving birth and his father despises him, along with his deformed twin brother attached to him. The only one who can see past the deformity and cares for both kids is their aunt, but while she's away on a trip one day the dad hires secretly a group of rather sadistic doctors to separate the twins. He keeps the normal-looking one and tosses the deformed one out with the trash... that is, until the brother comes to his rescue. Now he is out in the big city to get revenge for his brother on anyone who messed with their life together. When I first saw the trailer for this film I thought it would be a really lousy sci-fi film. However, it was great! Yeah it was low-budget, but nonetheless a funny and creepy horror film. The scene with Doctor Cutter, one of the many doctors responsible for separating the twins (she's now a vet at the local animal hospital) having her face turned into a pin cushion with lab scalpels, was surprisingly hilarious. One thing I have to say is, what the heck was the dad's issue!? He took the deformed brother out with the garbage, that's horrible! The film was a lot lie the 1973 film 'Sisters', where one conjoined twin is normal and the other is a malformed psychopath. If you're looking for a fun but still half-decent horror film, try Basket Case, you'll love it!
