Austin, Texas, is an Eden for the young and unambitious, from the enthusiastically eccentric to the dangerously apathetic. Here, the nobly lazy can eschew responsibility in favor of nursing their esoteric obsessions. The locals include a backseat philosopher who passionately expounds on his dream theories to a seemingly comatose cabbie, a young woman who tries to hawk Madonna's Pap test to anyone who will listen and a kindly old anarchist looking for recruits.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

I bought this movie decades ago when it came out on tape! I cannot tell you why I love this movie. Because I don't know why. Why I never included it in my list I don't know."Slacker" is my go-to-movie when I'm overwhelmed with life or just in a funky mood. So I watch this film and it's like good medicine. It makes me feel good, feel better. It's as if Richard Linklater made this for me. I want to be in the world he created for that 24hrs in Austin.I realize some people cannot tune into what's happening in Slacker but the movie makes sense to me.

It is true that American film "Slacker" is inundated with a lot of idlers, social misfits and other "good for nothing" characters but they do not engage in any kind of idle talk. One could have any idea, opinion about them but they need to be praised for possessing deep knowledge of their subjects. They are able to impress others around them solely due to their widespread knowledge of various subjects. For example : one of the characters speaks about Kennedy Assassination as if he has been invited by authorities to report it.There is not much which happens as "Slacker" is devoid of any plot.In this sense,it is an acute as well meaningful observation of people who belong to a certain milieu. The walks depicted in "Slacker" have a special quality as it enables them to effortlessly more from one topic to another without bothering to establish any coherent link between former and latter."Slacker" is a film which needs to be watched as its credo is to tell by showing instead of "Show but don't tell".

Richard Linklater creates an indie of a day in Austin, Texas. The camera follows one character leading to another in a series of portrait of misfits and disenfranchised. Linklater uses long uncut takes of these people talking usually in a monologue. The series of eccentric discussions and weird characters are a mesmerizing tapestry. Individually interesting, they are string together until it creates a picture of a subculture and a neighborhood. It's not a narrative and it's very random. I do have some problems especially with the lady getting run over and nobody seeming to care. It makes the people look heartless which I hope isn't Linklater's intent. Otherwise it's an interesting unique indie.

Dull and pretentious movie. Pointless unrelated stories stitched together. One or two of the stories are mildly interesting. However, the rest are incredibly dull, consisting mostly of people talking either about weird but dull stuff, pretentious philosophical things, inane conspiracy theories or boring domestic stuff. I generally like character-driven dramas, but this was horrible. None of the characters are likable. In fact, they're all incredibly loathsome. Bit hard to feel engaged in the movie if you hate ALL the characters...Notable only for being Richard Linklater's second movie as director (and writer). Thankfully, he got better. A lot better. His next movie was Dazed and Confused...
