The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

"First Born" is a clichéd but watchable thriller.Laura (Shue) is a dancer who gets pregnant and moves into a country home with her husband (Steven Mackintosh). After the pregnancy, she starts getting post-partum depression. She uses (Tom Cruise's) advice to not go on drugs. She starts seeing and believing things that aren't real.Elisabeth Shue puts in a good performance, but the script and plotting are lacking. It's basically the same scene for 90 minutes. Laura goes crazy and no believes her, Ad Nauseum. The ending, while interesting, can't bring the movie up to snuff in time.Overall, "First Born" is a decent movie, but the script, idea and execution could've been way better. For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com

Poorly written script, and directors art visions about women,I don't want to recommend this, slow, poor, disturbing, but is not as different as they says.Seen it before parts put together without any skills.Unforunatelly Elizabeth Shue plays with one boring face in the whole movie.Laughable dialogs makes the situation worst, but not in a good way, cause this movie, and it's director has not real sense of humor.Feels like the movie is almost 150 minutes long, while not,but feels like that long.Officially this movie has not(V)or(TV)-sign,or rating by IMDb.At this moment, but I will not wonder if years after this will get it,cause it worth that.1,2/10-not worth watching.

There seems to be some confusion over this movie. It should be, as we see much of it through the eyes of a woman teetering on the edge of insanity. Some call it post-partum psychosis but she was hearing voices and 'recruiting' a baby doll long before she had the baby herself. She did not want this baby. It took attention away from her and considering she was nuts anyway ( discussing her dark thoughts only within a diary ) she was hearing crying even when there wasn't any. She made several subconscious attempts to get rid of the baby ( leaving it in the car, leaving a knife in the crib, putting a 'curse' on it, etc ) before finally finishing the job. She 'subconsciously' killed her dog, too.The old woman who was hired to help, recognized the 'curse' attempt being made on the baby and tied something to reverse it, under her crib. Earlier in the movie, a street person spit on the restaurant window she was in, as if she sensed she was evil too.I think what threw a lot of people off was the showing of the main character buying a book on curses at the end of the movie, when in reality, she likely bought it at the beginning and brought in the mice herself and everything else to carry out the 'curse'.It had to give you chills when the baby's name was FINALLY mentioned at the end ( after she got rid of it ) and we realize then that she didn't even recognize the baby's name!! A weak male lead really hurt this movie. Its too bad they did not give Shue someone to work with.I would have cut the supermarket scenes. They were not necessary and the Editor blew it there. This is a pure Hitchcock-style move. I am sorry there were no explosions for those with IQs under 50, just a solid movie for people who had enough patience to see this one pays off!

it moves slowly, I will admit, but I was hooked and couldn't turn away. Perhaps it was because I had no clue what the title or plot was and missed the opening credits so I kept trying to figure out what was going to happen. Forget about which characters should have been written differently, or the "I would have said this instead" reviews. The characters were all believable and the plot and storyline were completely legitimate. The darkness and eeriness of the movie were reminiscent of those thrillers like Dressed to Kill and Gaslight. I loved the ghost/horror movies of the 60's and 70's, so perhaps that's why I liked this so much (Legend of Hell House, I Saw what you Did, etc.)I enjoyed the psychological teases and found the ending appropriate and satisfying. For those who are used to movies spoon-feeding everything to you, don't bother. If you like thinking about things, you'll probably enjoy it. Elizabeth Shue was terrific. She was very convincing and made the movie completely believable.
