A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

I found this movie to be entertaining and a lot of fun and after all isn't that what movies are for: fun and entertainment? No, there was no great scientific accuracy on tornadoes or nuclear plants but who cares? It isn't a documentary. The acting was pretty good from a great cast and the characters are likable and believable. The story line was entertaining and exciting even if it was not based on hard core reality in all areas. This movie held the interest of my family and friends from start to finish and the comments on heroes and villains alike kept coming. All in all an engaging movie and with popcorn and snacks added it makes for a great Saturday night.

...were my precise thoughts as 'Atomic Twister' began late last night on BBC 1. Long having been an aficionado of 'bad-film-ery' there was something grimly enticing about the prospect of something of the order of 'Storm Chasers: Revenge Of The Twister' combined with 'Atomic Train', in a late-night TV movie, Middle America in jeopardy sort of way and boy was I not disappointed. For me it wasn't so much the technical inaccuracies that stood out, since I don't claim to be a nuclear expert. It was the way in which at every turn if anything could go wrong it did, most spectacularly the satellite dish that was the station's lifeline to the outside world being blown clean off by one of those dratted twisters (UH OH!) The 'subtlety' of the offering was best summed up by our main protagonist's son and the babysitter indulging in a swift game of 'Twister' (get it?) Investigating this priceless slice of cinematic history on IMDb has incidentally brought up a fascinating piece of trivia - that Carl Lewis was born on the same day as Princess Diana, so I'm very thankful for having stumbled across 'Atomic Twister' for that 'factoid' alone.I'm giving it a '5' since that's as close as I can get to a 50:50 mixture of awful and excellent.

I thought it might be from the 'Airplane' stable and expected Leslie Nielson to suddenly appear to check out the reactor with his stethoscope. Admittedly, it was made for TV so we don't expect Hitchcock or Spielberg, nor do we expect quality performances but this film was sunk by cliché, incoherent direction, wooden acting and afternoon soap-opera production values. At every crisis, when we are told everything will go critical in three minutes, we are diverted to another lengthy scene with sloppy, sentimental kids and policemen overcoming their past personality disorders, termagant truckers and 'authority' being challenged. The three minutes must have been up twelve times and counting in the second reel - but this director managed to remove any potential for tension by flabby timing, irrelevant digressions and unintentional humour arising, I suspect, out of a complete lack of empathy with the subject. The cast run about like hysterical hens - even Homer Simpson makes a more convincing safety officer - the technology is plain daft - the dialogue and action is drenched in the sort of syrupy saccharine emotion which seems to dominate the American film industry - and, of course they all 'lurve' each other at the end- The house collapses but the corpse's makeup is intact and the little boy finds his crash helmet before he takes his bicycle out on the freeway! One of the cast prays at the end and so, I suspect, does the producer!

One of the greatest film masterpieces i've ever seen. An excellent mixture of suspense, drama, and comedy. The climax; when the town is about to explode in a nuclear holocaust, a tornado is baring down on a over-turned car that is leaking gasoline and sitting on the edge of a cliff, with a young girl in it, when Jake heroically put himself in harms way to save the girl, who was his ex-girlfriend, just in time before the car plummets over the cliff. Our hero Jake again proves his manhood as he stares down death by facing off against a semi-truck. The movie comes to a suspenseful end as the nuclear supervisor shows her skills as a diesel mechanic to save the country from disaster.
