In New York City, Thom is broke and jobless, illegally working as a taxi driver. Claire is a successful business-woman, but personally she's in shambles - then comes the phone call that her estranged father is in the hospital. Not knowing what to do, Claire hops in Thom's cab and orders him to just drive and so he does. The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

The chemistry between the two main characters is what really makes this movie work but, also, their story arc. The movie goes for - and we get - a deeper sense of the "real" characters and doesn't go for some easy, cheap laughs that you might find in a similar plot. There is an especially wonderful scene (no spoiler here) where Tom so wants to change and he makes a promise to Claire and she says the most simple, perfect, and heart-felt line of the movie. Simply; "I know." Also, it's really easy in these kind of movies to have stereotypes; yet, and every single character - even the ones with very limited screen time - have the sense of a deepness about them. It really is a wonderfully realized movie. Scott F. - Pacifica, CA

It's a romantic comedy plus a road trip with some family drama. We've all seen a hundred of them. Which means it's all about the execution. And, sadly, that execution is only adequate, not great. The acting, the cinematography, even the story are fine. What's not fine is that, like too many movies, the director and/or scriptwriter treat us like idiots who have never seen a movie before. The first fifteen minutes are a waste of time, setting up the characters in a way that's utterly unnecessary; and there are a few similar such moments through the rest of the movie where we are told the obvious. Do yourself a favor and double your enjoyment of the movie. Skip through the first fifteen minutes in a minute or less, watching a scene here, 20 seconds there; jump in res media at 15 minutes, and experience the movie like an adult who doesn't need to be spoon fed genre conventions as though they're an audience member at L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat.

Just watched this for the first time...so glad I stumbled upon it. This is not the usual fair that all to often promises much but delivers very little. I did not want the film to end. I was completely captivated by their journey and I don't mean the road trip. Both so vulnerable in many ways yet both characters were pretty strong minded. Amber is such a class actor, beautiful, convincing and completely believable...and her true to life husband and director Sam was just as good. I thought the chemistry was superb throughout. Suffice to say that there are no predictable story lines and at no time will you lose interest. Uplifting and energising film. 10/10 for me!

I got the same sensation when I watch for first time little miss sunshine or Juno, this one for me Take Me Home is the Indie Movie of the Year!I will not label it as Romantic Comedy at all, for me is a Road Movie with a very good script, good acting very good music ( had remember me Into The Wild, not because Eddie Vedder, more because was always on the right spot, driving you through the movie ) and awesome Sam Jaeger, directing for first time and lead actor.I'm a very disappointed that this movie didn't get more promotion, this is a movie that would break the box office if there were some good promotion from the distributors. For me the indie movie of the Year!
