The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

Ah, the Buttercream Gang! Where do I begin? Is it the truly gripping plot, the heart wrenching performances, or perhaps the life changing soundtrack that makes this movie a real winner. I must admit this movie makes me cry every time i see it. The fact that Pete Turner would leave his group of sweet, inspiring friends to become a gangsta, just gets me right in the heart. watch out, might not want to let the kids see this one. pete's gang pulls kids off the see saw, spray paints a smiley face on a building, and steals fruit pies. the outfits were a little extreme too. when it comes to true gangsta clothes, this movie hit a little too close to the mark. kids, shield your eyes. Michael weatherred gives a tortured performance as pete turner, especially the classic grocery store scene, where he utters the immortal line, "Because I hate myself!" Marlon Brando better watch his back. And as for Jason Johnson, the hottie who plays good boy Scott Carpenter, well, lets just say there's gonna be a new set of handprints in front of the Grauman's Chinese theater. Trust me on this, you won't want to miss this movie milesone.

I don't know where to start. I actually just viewed the buttercream gang a few days ago and thought it was groundbreaking. I cant remember if I saw it when I was little but I'm glad i got to see it now. It is my friends favorite movie as a kid and we were shocked at how perfect this film was. The scene when Scott questions whether Pete stole the treats is pure cinematic bliss. "You're just like all the rest...your think I want it this way!!!" delivered by Pete Valdez is a line which I think equals any delivered in Gone With the Wind. The soundtrack is simply stunning, adding an emotional depth which would put any recent soundtrack to shame. The cast is perfect. Scott's dad gives an academy award worthy performance as a man struggling with making the right decisions for his family. But the real standout is actor Michael Weatherrred playing Pete "Valdez" Turner, a good kid who gets a taste of the thug life when he encounters "The Blades" gang while living with his aunt in Chicago. Pete comes back and goes against the buttercreamer code by breaking bottles, throwing firecrackers, stealing treats and apples, lighting fires, taking kids lunches, and teaching others they can have anything they want by just taking it. Pete's final breakdown in Graf's store is a scene I think will go down in film history as one of the most heartbreaking portrayals of a troubled youth coming to terms with his problems. I'm sure Spielberg or Scorsese will try to remake this film some day to cash in on an Oscar, but it will never match the genius of the original masterpiece. AND REMEMBER "Buttercream isn't just about helping people out.. it's about having fun."

This was possibly one of the most offensive movies I've ever seen. It is set in a town in which everyone is blonde, goes to the same church, sweeps their huge porches all day, and generally acts the part of good, clean Americans. It's the sort of town that might have Wilford Brimley as mayor. The only "troubled" kid (there must be one) loses his father and moves to (horror) Chicago to live with his aunt. Of course he then joins a gang, starts a life of crime, decides to use his mother's last name, Valdez (a sure sign of a troublemaker), and gets sent packing back to ideal land by his aunt. Well, he then wreaks havoc on the town until all the good Christians help him mend his ways. He shapes up, and we know this because he drops the clearly dangerous Valdez and resumes his good American name, Turner. Oy vey.

The film is OK, I mean it teaches a moral, that's good, but this movie is loaded with hilarious drama and ideas. I think it's especially funny when Pete, being the psychopathic idiot when they give him pop and everything, goes ballistic in Mr. Graff's shop and rants and says: "That's it I'm gonna sabotage your whole shop." and starts breaking things and scaring people. I haven't seen the movie in almost 3 years but I reflect on it and now I laugh at that until my stomach cramps. And even then after I laugh it convulses rapidly. I just think that part of the movie is FUNNY!
